Jagnoo residents face water resource crunch
People walk long distance to fetch drinking water
6/8/2010 11:07:42 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
UDHAMPUR, June 8: The district administration's claims that necessary measures have been initiated to deal with water crisis has turned out to be somewhat hollow here if one looks at the prevailing situation on the ground.
The residents of Jagnoo area, just few kilometers away from power corridors in the district, have been acute shortage of water since the onset of summer season as the water bodies have dried up here. The problem has been aggravated because of a drought like situation in all parts of the State.
The residents complained that they have to carry water from far off places because of the acute shortage of drinking water in the area.
"Our taps have gone dry and we have been getting water after five days and that too, for 20 minutes only. We had submitted a memorandum to the District Development Commissioner seeking his personal intervention but things have not been changed till date," Kuldeep Kumar, a local resident said.
He complained, "We have to travel two kilometres distance to fetch water for ourselves. We are facing lots of problem because of water scarcity. Water is not even there in the tube wells as all of them got totally dried."
"The scanty and extremely poor rainfall has created a tough situation for all the Jagnoo and its adjoining villages during this summer. It is very tough for people to quench their thirst," he said.
He made startling revelations that the water shortage problem is so severe that certain neighborhoods in the village don't receive water at all.
When contacted, Bashir Ahmed Khan, District Development Commissioner Udhampur said, "We are well aware about the water shortage and we have pressed the services of water tankers in the area. Only those houses, which are located at the tail-end in the area, have been facing the problem. We have formulated a scheme and the problem would be redressed by the end of this month."
