NSF stages protest, demands independent probe | 'Fire extinguishers purchase scam' | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jun 8: National Secular Forum (NSF) today staged a protest in Jammu University campus to express its dissatisfaction over functioning of the School Education Department and reiterated its demand of independent or State Vigilance Organization or Crime Branch inquiry into fire extinguishers "purchase scam". The protestors led by Vikas Sharma, president NSF took out a rally on the Campus and torched the effigy of Secretary Education, G A Peer condemning his alleged involvement in whole episode. Shouting slogans against the authorities concerned, the NSF president questioned the credibility of the enquiry ordered in connection with alleged procurement of fire extinguishers on high rates maintaining that as the enquiry is being conducted by the Education directorate itself then how could it be justified? He demanded that the State Government either give the task of enquiry to State Vigilance Organization or Crime Branch or some independent body so that those responsible for the "fraud" are made accountable. Sharma apprehended that those who have been assigned the task of enquiry would never implicit the guilty officers as they are on the same board. "We urge the Chief Minister to look into the matter and order an impartial inquiry as the case is of financial embezzlement worth crores of rupees," he said. He warned, "We want to make it clear that such fake enquiries would not be tolerated at all at any cost and NSF cadre would intensify its agitation against the Minister for School Education, Peerzada Mohd Sayeed."It may be mentioned here that the state government had recently directed the school education department to install fire extinguishers in all government as well as private schools in compliance with the Supreme Court ruling.
