Chaotic condition at Jammu Rly Stn authorities unperturbed | | | early times report JAMMU, June 8: Jammu railway station can be termed as entry point or pravesh dwar to the tourism industry of the state It is one of the busiest and over-crowded stations in the country. Being the terminus for railways carrying millions of pilgrims to Mata Vaishno Devi and tourist to Kashmir, it has attained unique significance. But the quality of tidiness an cleanliness that should have been the hallmark of the station are dismally lacking. The first impression gathered by the visitors and pilgrims about Jammu is almost disappointing. They are faced with numerous problems mostly because of laxity of railway administrative staff. Thousands of pilgrims and tourist arrive every day in this 'City of Temples' giving a great boost to its economy. Being the starting point of pilgrimage for the pilgrims from far and wide to the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi, transport and communication of the city has of late received tremendous boost. . But how sad is it that as enthusiastic visitors, pilgrims and passengers step out of the railway station, they meet with piles of garbage, litter and stinking refuse. As if this welcome is not enough, they are harangued by beggars squatting along the pathways making their passage hazardous. All sorts of suspects, thieves, pickpockets, swindlers and bad characters throng the sidelines of the station ready to relieve the travelers of their baggage or property on slightest negligence. First impression is the last impression, goes the axiom. Alas! Jammu railway station functionaries as well as Jammu Development Authority (JDA), both have turned a blind eye to the dismal and chaotic situation prevailing at the Jammu railway station. .There is massive encroachment of the link- road to the railway station by vendors of all hues, fruit sellers, garment sellers, sports equipment shops, souvenir vendors, eateries, and dhabas, These stalls are the property of Northern Railways that has rented them out to the shopkeepers.. Local people resentful of selfishness of the vendors complain that they dump the wastage in the canal causing enormous pollution and ecological degradation. This has become a source of severe health hazard, and breeds many diseases in summer season. The authorities are not paying any heed to these problems. Unhygienic conditions of the railway station especially in hot summer are likely to spread epidemic which would scare away large number of visitors to Jammu. Of course for regular visitors the shabby, crowded and unclean conditions of Jammu railway station may be a matter of routine. But for the first-timers, it creates an impression of utter disappointment. All through their journey from distant parts of the country, they come with much euphoria of visiting a hill station clean and neat and hospitable. Unfortunately this dream is shattered just once they put their foot on Jammu railway station. Pilgrimage to Shri Amarnth Shrine in Kashmir is to start very soon and a great inflow of pilgrims is expected. Railway authorities need to take this into account and do all they can to streamline the station and its environs. Auto driver-Manmohan Singh said that Jammu railway station is beset with many problems which the authorities must address without delay. When contacted, the Station Master Jammu, Ashwani Kumar said that he was concerned only with the trains, their timing and problems of the passengers traveling by trains. He said that any matter falling outside these parameters was not his concern. He added that for these matters the proper quarter to be contacted was the engineering wing of the railways for these queries. This is how he passed on the buck. The engineering wing could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. SSP Railways, Jammu Zone Vijay Kumar stated that sometimes these problems also created law and order situation. The General Railway Police would co-operate with railway authorities in any attempt needed to mitigate the difficulties of the passengers.
