6/8/2010 11:49:07 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 8: Due to forest fire, four landmines exploded today on the Line of Control (LoC) in Balakote sub-sector of Poonch. The fire started from the Gola woods on the side of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) in the morning and soon spread to Balakote, engulfing about 13 km area, police sources said. In the fire, at least 50 landmines exploded at Balakote, the sources added.
Sources said army, police and forest officials were engaged in extinguishing the fire and stopping the flames from spreading to the nearby villages. Panicked by the blasts, residents of Deri Dabsi and Lanjyote villages fled their houses.
Two forest compartments (144 and 145) had caught fire, forest range officer Zafar Javed said and added thousands of green trees were burnt.
Sources said due to the demining of a vast area on the LoC, army had enhanced vigil and ambushes had been laid to foil any infiltration bid from across the LoC.
