Sadbhavna Akhtar Memorial Cricket Tournament

Jammu, June 9: Armu has been actively involved in organizing various extra- curricular activities and campaigns to promote awareness among the locals, especially the youth of the state.
In one such event, 26 Rashtrya Rifles (KUMAON) under the aegis of Headquarters 9 Sector Rashtrya Rifles, organized Sadbhavana Akhtar Memorial Cricket Tournament at Devigol, Patnazi (Kistwar) from 3- 9 June 2010.
A total of 16 teams of Kishtwar region participated in the cricket tournament and played 19 matches in all. The keenly contested final was played between Friends Cricket Club, Patnazi and Mohammaden Cricket Club, Jarwar.
The team of Friends Cricket Club, Patnazi won the toss and elected to bat first. They made a total of 135 runs in 15 overs.
In reply, Jarwar team was all out for 42 runs. The event was witnessed by no fewer than five hundred local spectators who cheers off both the teams enthusiastically. On behalf of Commander 9 sector Rashtriya Rifles.
Commanding Officer 26 Rashtriya Rifles (KUMAON) gave away the prizes and handed over trophies to Winners and Runners Up. Master Sunil Kumar was declared the 'Man of the Match' for his excellent performance in the final.
Devigol a remote area of Kishtwar had been, until recent days, infested with militancy, which has now bee cleared by concerted efforts of the Army and security forces.
Responding to the wishes of the locals, the Army organized the first ever cricket match in the area.
By these goodwill gestures the Army helps the local youth to become a part of national mainstream in positive manner.
It would help socialization among the youth and inculcate in them the spirit of togetherness and national unity. The idea is to save the youth from being misled by militants and provocateurs.
Holding a tournament in a remote area of the state, in which 16 teams participated, shows that the people want peace and tranquility to prevail.
Local populace highly appreciated Army's good will gesture and commitment towards engagement of youth in sports activities.
Such events carry the message of peace, harmony and progress and motivate the youth to become an integral part of society.
