PTU Distance Education programs get approval

JAMMU, June 9: Punjab Technical University (PTU), Jalandhar has been accorded approval by 'UGC-AICTE-OEC Joint Committee' for all programs offered through Distance Education Mode.
It has been specified in the approval letter no. OEC/2010/6925 that Distance Education and Online Education cannot have boundaries or State jurisdiction and therefore these programs should be offered as per the ACT and Statues of the University.
Through Gazette Notification 44 dated 1st March 1995, MHRD had stated that all the qualifications awarded through Distance Education by the Universities stand automatically recognized for the purpose of employment in Central Government offices and for all purposes of Higher Education, provided it has been approved by Distance Education Council.
Lately for better coordination between the statuary bodies of higher education, primarily, DEC, UGC and AICTE, MHRD formed a 'Joint Committee of UGC-AICTE-DEC'. A high power 'Expert Committee' constituting of members nominated by UGC, AICTE
& DEC visited PTU campus on July 27, 2009. Based on the recommendations of the expert committee of the Joint Committee, DEC has accorded approval to PTU for next three academic years.
PTU Vice Chancellor, Dr. Rajneesh Arora said, "Our mission is to provide quality technical education through distance education programs. Main challenges of access, equality and quality in Higher Education in India can only be effectively resolved through distance education. Distance education enables the masses to realize their dream of quality education."
Dr. N.P Singh, Dean DEP, PTU said that various innovative inputs are being added to the program, adding that the most important challenge is to conduct examination for large number of students across the country. "We will be establishing technology centers at all our examination centers so that the question paper may be delivered through web without any human intervention," Dr Singh said.
