J&K Gujjars hail PM for announcing 2 Cultural Centres | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 9: Scheduled Tribe Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir welcomed Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's announcement about establishing of two "Cultural Centres for Gujjars and Bakerwals" in State saying that this will go a long way in preservation and propagations of nomadic and tribal cultural heritage which is surviving since centuries against all odds. Community throu-gh-Tribal Research and Cult-ural Foundation -a frontal organization of Gujjars also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister for his announcement regarding sanctioning additional allocation for socio-economic and educational development of Gujja-rs and Bakerwals under Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs. Prime Minister on 8th June, during Kashmir visit, annou-nced establishment of cultural centres for Gujjars, Bakerwals, besides computer labs in tribal schools for these groups and Self-Help Groups of women belonging to Gujjar and Bakerwal communities. Dr. Singh also announced additional allocation from Union Ministry of Tribal Welfare for local community based volunteers' scheme for delivery of Health and Education to nomadic groups. Reacting on this, Dr. Javaid Rahi, Secretary of Tribal Foundation told reporters that we consider this announcement as one of the significant move towards preservation and promotion of Gojri language and Gujjar Culture which is having 5000 year history at his back but was in the list of threaten languages of India. "Our community appreciate this historic step initiated by Prime Minister said Dr. Javaid Rahi adding that this project will have a very positive and for reaching impact on glorious Heritage of Gujjars- which is also considered as an ethno-linguistic minority of Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Rahi said in a letter of Thanks addressed to PM -the community also sought immediate intervention of Prime Minister for inclusion of Gojri into the eighth schedule of Indian constitution and said that their tribal language deserves more constitutional safeguards and on merit should be inducted into the list of official languages of India. The letter further reads being oldest and ancient languages of South Asia, it requires urgent preservations and indispensable propagations on priority which will not possible with out grant the status of official language to Gojri. Inclusion of Gojri is still pending with the union government since 1991 which is adversely effecting on development of tribal culture of Gujjars, Dr. Rahi said.
