Staining the nation's colour Men in Blue; Killer Too
6/9/2010 11:40:30 PM
ET SPECIAL
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 9: The color of India has started turning turbid. To start with, the strong forte of men-in-blue, of late having shown its impregnability withering into the hands of underdogs Zimbabweans in a cricket itinerary is first example of Indian tint turning murkier.
Immediately to follow is the Indian Blue line buses in Capital wreaking havoc among the people there with every other day the killer bus devouring a human life or two, thus staining Blue with black.
Now on local panorama in Jammu, a new and hazardous spectacle enacted by Cops in Blue is a common phenomenon.
Two "murders" of young aspiring students of Gandhi Nagar Women College the other day and a serious accident of a woman with her two siblings landing them in hospital, all have a "nonchalant" demeanor of Jammu traffic cops behind, towards which no administrative cognizance is initiated.
"There cannot be any enquiry into the actual cause of accident of the two young girls because the main culprits in this regard are only the traffic cops who are dancing scot free on roads and emerging like ghosts to nab two wheelers and matador drivers," said a daily commuter from Rehari Chungi to Bari Barhmana working in a private organization adding that department is hand in glove with such 'indecent' activity being performed nakedly on roads.
As per the new system having surfaced on the Jammu city roads, traffic cops have arranged for a 'smart network' throughout the area to trap the two wheeler riders without helmets and ask them to shelve the money.
Besides, the other big target of such network is Matador drivers.
A traffic cop on condition of anonymity that since there is a 'give and take' system in vogue in the department with the mini-bus pliers, a small amount of which coming into his lap too, confesses, "we have to jump erratically in front of the bus that evades our signal and in the process, while managing an escape the driver can loose control resulting into mishaps".
Though such jugglery is going on unabated on roads by the traffic cops, the victims being two wheeler riders or the matador pliers only, not a single traffic violation is reported by the traffic cops for the luxury cars that are more in number in Jammu than the two wheelers or the matadors.
"We fear to raise objection for the luxury cars as we do not know how influential connection the bearer of the vehicle may have in the administration or otherwise," said a senior traffic cop on the assurance of anonymity.
He also admitted that a strong rider from the upper Traffic department hierarchy is there not to touch the luxury car drivers and make money out of petty owners of scooters, auto rickshaws as well as matador drivers.
It is pertinent to mention that since matador drivers have to pay the "entry money", and scooter drivers to pay for not wearing helmet only, no other important aspect is checked by traffic cops. The blue turned ultimately black.
