EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 9: Jammu continues to be neglected by the powers that be at New Delhi or in the state and this has now become quite evident from the two days visit of Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh to Kashmir Valley on June 7 and 8.
Though high expectations were attached by the Jammuites with the PM's special visit to the state and they were expecting that Dr Manmohan Singh will announce some sops for the people of this region too but Prime Minister kept all guessing as he did not prefer to make any mention of the people living this side of Peerpanchal who have much more problems than that of Kashmir Valley and have suffered a constant neglect for last 62 years by the powers that be at the helm of affairs in the State or at New Delhi.
The constant raw deal given to this region of the state has led to a lot of resentment among the masses and the stoic silence maintained by the Prime Minister on some major problems confronting the people of this region has not been taken well by the people of the region.
According to sources the Prime Minister did not utter a word regarding delimitation which has been a growing demand of the people of this region as Jammu with more territorial area and equal population with Kashmir Valley has less number of seats in both Parliament and State Assembly than the Valley.
The Prime Minister was supposed to refer these issues while he announced different sops for the Kashmir Valley though the issue was well in advance brought into his notice by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Panthers Party delegations who called on him on June 7. The silence on the part of Dr Singh on this issue has apprehensions among the people of this region, sources said.
The sources said that PM has similarly not made any mention to ameliorate the lot of West Pak and POK refugees nor has he made any reference towards the problems of militancy affected people of Jammu region or Kashmiri migrants for whose rehabilitation package was announced by him two years back.
Though the West Pak refugees issue is a complex problem but no Central Government till date has been sincere in solving this problem once for all, the sources said, adding the present Union Government's stand in finding out a so that these people can be treated as permanent residents of the state is in no way different than it's predecessors, the sources added.
Similar has been the problems of PoK refugees and the terrorism affected people of Jammu region who too have been struggling for their rights for years together but to no avail, the sources, said adding much intriguing is that the advisors of Dr Singh and his coterie in Congress too did not give him any wise council on this account despite the fact that the Party could not have dreamed to share the power in state had the Jammu region not backed it in 2008 Assembly polls.
Likewise the sources said the PM did not make any mention about the displaced People from Valley who are living an exiled life for over last years indifferent parts of country and for whose return the doors have been sealed by the fundamentalist elements in Kashmir. Though Dr Singh had announced a rehabilitation package for these hapless people over two years back but it has not make any headway till date due to callousness of the State Government. And instead of taking the authorities to task in J&K the Prime Minister has not deemed it fit to make any mention of the same.
Last but not least Dr Singh has hurt the feelings of majority of Jammuites when he did not utter even a word about the promotion of world famous Basmati and rice of Jammu especially RS Pura Sector while he made announcement of national mission for promotion of Safron in Kashmir Valley, the sources said, adding the Basmati growers of the region feel totally neglected.
The sources said the Basmati cultivators in Jammu region are in much desperation and many of them have converted the land for cultivation of other kind of paddy due to the lack of attention from Government towards promotion of Basmati and failure to provide support price to farmers.
The sources said the people in Jammu region are not opposed to the promotion of saffron cultivation but at the same time the crops and fruit of Jammu too need attention. The Prime Minister is himself on record to make mention of RS Pura Basmati at an international meet so what stopped him in announcing any kind of support for promotion of it's cultivation, the sources added.
