EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 9: True to his image and temprament of questioning things he considers wrong in a forceful manner, firebrand Member Parliament from kathua CH Lal Singh of the Congress party on Wednesday created ripples here in the corridors of power by shooting a one liner --"Chief Minister What is this".
Singh was referring to the decision taken by the government to levy tax on items transported from outside the state for the consumption of pilgrims performing annual Amaranth pilgrimage beginning July 1. It may be mentioned that Lal Singh is first leader in Congress party, which is main ally of NC led coalition government in J&K, to question this decision and express concern for pilgrims.
Interacting with the media persons here in Jammu on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony Ch Lal Singh took a tough stand over the decision to levy entry tax at Lakhanpur.
Singh said there is no dearth of examples where either tax evasion is taking place or other means have been adopted to escape the taxmen then why at all the state government is pushing hard to levy tax on items meant for the consumption by the pilgrims and is not ready to exempt the tax.
He said instead of imposing tax and generating extra revenue the state govt can afford to relax these stringent measures and earn more revenue form other sources. Few lakhs would not make significant contribution in the state revenue, Singh added advising the state govt from taking such measures which is going to directly affect the pilgrims pocket.
Without mincing his words Lal Singh went to the extent of saying, "i am going to see chief minister and i will ask him Chief Minister what is this..........".
Speaking his heart over another contentious issue of the appointment of vice chancellor of the central university of Jammu the congress MP, popular among the masses for his real politick, said even after the passage of so many months it is difficult to understand the reason behind delay caused in the appointment of vice chancellor. He said till the time the govt is going to wait for the selection of the competent vice chancellor an officer of high integrity or a CEO should be put in place to kickstart other important works without disturbing the crucial time.
He also supported the idea of appointing local Vice chancellor from Jammu region for the coveted post.
