Azad wrongly interprets PM's dialogue offer | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 9: Wrongly interpreting Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh's statement that his government was ready to talk to anybody who shuns the path of violence, former Chief Minister and Union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad today said the offer of talks was meant for militants and not for the Hurriyat leaders. "The Hurriyat leaders have walked out of the dialogue process. New Delhi has never declined to talk. We invited them to round table deliberations but they refused", Azad told reporters after reviewing the progress of work of Super Specialty Hospital in the summer capital. Azad clarified that the PM's condition to shun violence before talks was for militants. "If Hurriyat talks about Human Rights violations, they should come forward and discuss it on negotiating table. Instead of issuing statements in media they should directly approach us. They may have some things against us; we have some things against them. These things can be discussed on table," Azad said. Giving a brief history of Mizoram issue, Azad said, "Twenty-five years ago when Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister and I was Minister of Sate for Home, we had the same condition for a dialogue with the insurgents. Hundreds of insurgents surrendered and today Mizoram is one of the most peaceful states of India. For long lasting peace gun has to go." Probably realizing his mistake of wrongly interpreting the Prime Minister's dialogue offer, Azad did some damage control. He urged the separatist leaders to join the dialogue process. "Mere slogans, hartals and stone pelting won't yield anything. Disputes can be settled only on table." Azad did not forget to praise the Chief Minister. He said. "The Chief Minister gave a good presentation to the PM and he was impressed." Pertinent to mention, the Prime Minister complimented Omar Abdullah for his presentation. He said: "Omar was the youngest and the most impressive Chief Minister." Azad had accompanied the Prime Minister on Monday to Kashmir. But he stayed for one more day to review the progress of health projects in Kashmir.
