Srinagar despite rated 4th dirtiest city, Govt still unmoved: Karra
6/11/2010 11:30:35 PM
Early Times report
Srinagar, June 11: Concerned over deteriorated condition civic amenities in city, senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Tariq Hameed Karra said that even Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh during his recent visit pointed towards the problems being faced in the city. Karra blamed present government for worsening conditions of the historic city, which has been transformed into a virtual slum, according to him. Karra said even after being declared the fourth dirtiest city in the country, State Government is yet to rise from slumber and address issues of sanitation, hygiene, drinking water supply, drainage and power shortage facing the city. "It is an irony that even after the concern shown by the Prime Minister over the plight of the historic city and its inhabitants, State Government is still unmoved.
Accusing ruling National Conference of having exploited the gullible residents of the Srinagar city for power, Karra said the history is witness that the NC leadership has given nothing in return to the city except exploiting its residents for political gains. "Even today NC leaders are playing same old exploitative political game with the city and its residents," he said and added that instead of taking new initiatives towards the betterment of civic amenities in city, present government has in fact failed to build on the initiatives taken by the previous PDP-led coalition government for the betterment the city. "Because of present government's failure to address the developmental needs of the Srinagar city that, it has now acquired the dubious distinction of becoming 4th dirtiest city in the country," he said.
Expressing concern over the inordinate delay in the finalization of the state's annual plan for the financial year 2010-11, Karra said it is an irony that while almost half of the financial year is through, the state government is yet to get the current year's plan approved by the Planning Commission of India.
"This speaks loud and clear about the non-seriousness of the present government towards the issues of critical importance," he said.
