CAPD ration bungling in Chohala | Depot owner manhandled local villagers leading the protest | | Early Times report JAMMU, June 11: Under privileged people of village Chohala (R.S.Pura area) predominantly inhabited by the SC, are faced with threat to their lives for raising a cry against the highhandedness of local CAPD officials and corrupt Depot owners. They are leading the villagers against these corrupt practices. Issue had highlighted on June 10 that there was bungling at grassroots level in the supply of CAPD ration to the poor villagers of the Chohala. On the directions of the Minister for CAPD and Transport Qamar Ali Akhoon, a team of high officials of the Food and Supplies Department visited the village to take stock of the situation. It warned the Depots owners to stop the malpractices into which they have been indulging in. They also assured the villagers of initiating an enquiry into their complaint. Last night, one depot owner, Devi Dutta who has garnered the backing of local police and politicians manhandled one villager asking why he had raised the issue. Other depot owner also indulged in intimidating activities. The police declined to lodge villagers' complaint against the offender. Depot owners are reported to have links with the local MLA. There are four Depots distributing ration to different categories of Below Poverty Line (BPL), Above Poverty Line (APL), and most importantly Antodaya Ann Yojana (AAY). The villagers stated that Depot owners were selling CAPD ration at a price higher than prescribed and it did not reach the needy and the poor. Local police officials did not respond the queries regarding this case. When contacted, Minister for CAPD and Transport Qamar Ali Akhoon said, "We will take a strict action against the erring depot owners and departmental enquiry will also be initiated against them".
