Azad's views on PM's talks offer irk APHC leaders | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 11: "If the Government of India agreed to talk to us we are willing. If the Prime Minister is not keen to r esume dialogue with us we will not beg. "This is what APHC leadership has said while commenting on the Union Health Minister,Ghulam Nabi Azad's statement saying that the PM's offer of talks was meant for militants and other separatists groups and not for the Hurriyat Conference leaders. Azad had also stated that since the Hurriyat leaders had not accepted the invitation to join talks in the roundtable conferences convned by the Prime Minister they would not be invited to the proposed talks. A senior APHC leader,Prof.Abdul Gani Bhat, said "we did not participate in the roundtable conference for which we have been invited because we had found that our participation would be purposeless as we would be sitting with those who do not believe that Kashmir is a dispute."He said "we had a number of sessions with Atal Behari Vajpayee,L.K.Advani and Manmohan Singh in the past which by itself indicates that we are for a sustained and meaningful dialogue." Bhat stated that the Hurriyat Conference is happy that Delhi and Islamabad have decided to resume the process of dialogue and the upcoming talks between the Indian foreign Minister, S.M.Krishna, and is counterpart in Pakistan, Shah Mehmood Qureshi could remain Kashmir centric.Reminded that Delhi has decided to resort to reducing the trust deficit exercise during the talks Bhat said "there is no harm in doing so.Let the two sides initiate confidence building steps but the two sides have to discuss the Kashmir issue which is key to peace in the south Asian region." In reply to a qestion Bhat said that these confidence building measures could be taken by wit hdrawing troops from the villages and the towns of Jammu and Kashmir,by making people to people contact hassle free,by repealing the AFSPA,by opening more routes for trade and travel and by ensuring zero tolerance against human rights violations. He said once these measures were completed the level of mistrust and misgivings between the two sides will vanish like vapour. In reply to another question Bhat said "it will delay peace if Delhi insistd on discssing water,Siachen and ot her issues but not the Kashmir dispute."He said "sooner or later Kashmir issue has to be discussed and settled." He hoped that while doing so "aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir were taken into account" adding that it is in this contyext that "we ar e favouring involvement of representatives of people of Jammu and Kashmir in the India-Pakistan dialogue."
