Prime's Minister's much-hyped Kashmir visit: Message from Srinagar
6/11/2010 11:58:58 PM
RUSTAM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 11: The plight of the National Conference was all the more miserable. Its leadership knocked at the doors of the Prime Minister and complained that security forces were violating the human rights of Kashmiri people and this process must stop. The National Conference forgot that it was at the helm of affairs in the state and that to seek the Prime Minister's intervention would simply mean a big slap on the face of party leaders who were running the government. They forgot that it is the Chief Minister of the State, who happens to be one of the owners of what could be termed as the National Conference Private Company Limited, who presides over the Unified Command meetings, meetings that take decisions on how to tackle militants and put down militancy. The National Conference leadership made a mockery of itself and of those in the government by urging the Prime Minister to look into its complaint regarding violation of human rights.
The Chief Minister was also at the receiving end. In fact, the Prime Minister took to task the Chief Minister and his governmet by accusing them of not doing anything substantial to mitigate the hardships of the people. In fact, the Prime Minister snubbed the State Government for its failure to address the "day-to-day problems of the people". He said: "He has been told that in Srinagar and other cities people face problems related to power supply, drinking water, roads and ration shops. I am hopeful that the State Government will look into these complaints. The Central Government will extend all possible help to the Jammu and Kashmir Government in this regard."
It is true that a day later, the Prime Minister said that "Omar Abdullah is the best." But it was not really a compliment. It was virtually a taunt. The Prime Minister commended the Chief Minister not on the ground that he had performed well and done something good for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, but the manner in which he made a detailed and comprehensive presentation on developmental needs of the state. "I am complimenting the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister for such a detailed and comprehensive representation and he has presented a well-reasoned out case for developmental needs of the state…You are not only the youngest but also the most impressive Chief Minister". This was what the Prime Minister said and what he said could not be construed as a compliment. In fact, he exposed the working of his government by telling the Chief Minister on his face that his government had failed in meeting the most immediate needs of the people.
About the rabble-rousing People's Democratic Party, less said the better. The Prime Minister showed this party the place it rightfully deserved. The Prime Minister had perhaps come to realize that the People's Democratic Party consisted of leaders who were no more than disturbers of peace. That was the reason the Prime Minister did not accpt any of its demands. The fact is that the Prime Minister's Kashmir visit turned out to be an anti-climax for those who had expected the Prime Minister to make some significant announcements. No wonder then that some of the commentators have said that the Prime Minister's visit to the Kashmir Valley "has only ended up adding salt to the injury"; that "If Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Valley was expected to unveil some dramatic new political initiative on Kashmir, there is little that has changed"; and that "so, in a sense, the Prime Minister's visit has left a lot to desire."
