Student organisations condemn Police action, demand independent inquiry

JAMMU, June 14: The brutal cane charge on protesting students of Baba Baba Ghulam Shah Bhadshah University (BGSBU), Rajouri today sparked off protests in Jammu city with several student organisations accusing the University administration and Police department of adopting "repressive" tactics to suppress the voice of student community.
The activists of Jammu Joint Students' Federation (JJSF) staged a protest in front of Divisional Commissioner Office and demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident.
The protest was against the Police action on the student of varsity. The activists gathered at Divisional Commissioner Office and raised slogans against State government and Vice Chancellor of the University.
Partap Singh Jamwal, state vice president, JJSF said that the Vice Chancellor of the University had assured the students that they would get grace marks in their results as one of their papers was "out of syllabus".
"No student was awarded grace marks in the results. The students were expressing their concern peacefully but the Vice Chancellor used Police force to suppress the voice of the student who were sitting on hunger strike for the last few days," he alleged.
The protestors accused the Vice Chancellor of adopting "indifferent attitude" saying he was not ready to hear the students. "The statement of Vice Chancellor that they student were disrupting the exams was totally wrong and misleading," they said.
The JJSF alleged that the Vice Chancellor, Masood Choudhary has constituted a five members committee to inquiry this incident which was another "eye wash" for the students.
Later, a joint delegation comprising the leaders of the JJSF and Jammu Provincial Peoples Forum (JPPF) led by Judge (retd) Pavitar Singh met Divisional Commissioner and apprised him about the incident.
However, the JJSF leaders warned that they would continue their protest till the demands of students are not fulfilled.
Meanwhile, the state unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarathi Parishad (ABVP) has expressed concern over brutal lathi charge and firing by the police inside the BSBU campus of baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Rajouri allegedly at the behest of Vice Chancellor of BGSB to suppress the voice of agitating students who were on strike since last Wednesday against the "deteriorating" examination system of the university.
It described the brutal cane charge on students as "undemocratic" and "barbaric" and demanded removal of Masud Choudhary from the post of Vice Chancellor.
The Parishad has also urged the Chancellor to intervene into the matter and do justice with students' community. Similarly, National Secular Forum has also condemned the police action on the students. "The students of BGSBU had been protesting for the past many days for their genuine demands like Supplementary Exams, Re-evaluation and grace marks. Police fired tear gas shells which led to serious injuries to many students," Vikas Sharma, NSF president told reporters here.
He demanded independent inquiry into the whole incident and said that the demands of the students should be fulfilled at the earliest. . Progressive Students' Association (PSA) has condemned the brutal police action in Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University against the students.
The PSA city committee in its meeting fully supported the demands of the first year engineering students. The Committee has urged the Chief Minister to intervene into the matter.
Meanwhile, the activists of Sangarsh, in its high level meeting held at University of Jammu, Jammu condemned the brutal police lathicharge and firing by the Police personnel's on the agitating students of BGSBU, Rajouri.
The general secretary of the organisation, Suresh Kumar criticized the Vice Chancellor of BGSBU Rajouri and opined that such type of attitude should not be tolerated in the institution of higher learning in this democratic arena.
"The top officials of the university are acting like dictators in the university and try to crush the activism of the students, which would not be tolerated," he alleged.
Demanding the resignation of the Vice Chancellor of BGSBU, Suresh appealed to the Chief Minister, who happens to be the Chancellor of varsity to take stern action against those who were involved in crushing the constitutional voice of the students.
