Govt to focus on infrastructure for pilgrims

JAMMU, June 14: The state Government has finally decided to lay emphasis on the development of infrastruct ure for the benefit of pilgrims after it had been visualised that pilgrim tourism had come to stay as a backbone of the economy of people connected with it.
Official sources confirmed that tourist traffic to the Kashmir valley had been hit hard during the last 20 years because of militancy related violence but as far as the pilgrims traffic to Mata Vaishnove Devi Shrine,the holy cave of Amarnath and the Shadra Sharif in Rajouri militancy related activities had no impact on it.
Sources said that in fact the number of pilgrims to Mata Vaishnov Devi shrine had swelled from 18 lakh in 90's to 65 lakhs last year and the number of pilgrims visiting the Amarnath cave having increased from 10,000 in 90's to over three lakhs during the last five years. The sources explained that these pilgrims contribute to the economy of the state's people when they spend large sums of money on transport,on their board and lodge in hotels and on shopping. A large number of poneywalls, porters, hoteliers and house boat owners earn fortunes from these pilgrims.
The state Government has always treated tourism as one of the most crucial economic sectors for the State. Apart from sight seeing and adventure sports, the pilgrim tourism has become the biggest component of visitors to the State.
The government is encouraging and supporting the private sector with financial incentives and development of infrastructure.
Massive government effort is also involved in providing regulatory and security cover to the tourists and the pilgrims.
The government has also been undertaking promotional activities and organizing publicity to attract tourists to the beautiful state.
The government has completed the project of widening and upgradation of Khanabal-Pahalgam road at a cost of Rs.110 crore. The work on Narbal-Tangmarg road is in full swing and is expected to be completed by June 2010 at an estimated cost of Rs.116 crore.
The work on widening and upgradation of Domel-Katra road is under execution through Border Roads Organization.
These three roads are being funded under PMRP. once these roads were widened and upgraded it would ensure smooth and safe journey of tourists,visiting Pahalgam and Gulmarg and pilgrims visiting Amarnath Cave and Mata Vaishnov Devi shrine.
