Valley Shuts over Gellani’s call | 50 stone pelters rounded up in Police crackdown | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, June 14: Kashmir valley today observed umpteenth shutdown over the radical separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani's call even as the bustling tourist attractions remained unaffected and Police rounded up nearly two dozen youth, allegedly indulging in stone pelting, in a continued crackdown in the capital city. Chairman of so-called hardline faction of the separatist Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani had called for a Valley-wide shutdown today while asking the Kashmiris to attend the Rasm-e-Chaharum of class 12th student, Tufail Ahmed Matoo, at his Sayeeda Kadal residence in Srinagar. Matoo had died most probably from a severe head injury caused by a tearsmoke shell fired by Police to disperse a group of stone pelters at Gani Memorial Stadium on Friday last. While Police have maintained that an investigation would be launched only after receiving the post mortem report and examining some witnesses, family members insist that Matoo was returning from a tuition center and he was in no way associated with the unruly crowds. Reeling under curfew-like situation, downtown Srinagar localities, falling under the jurisdiction of five Police Stations, remained tense by Police officials claimed that the situation was under control. IGP Kashmir, Farooq Ahmed, maintained that two-odd incidents of thin demonstrations and clashes with Police took place at Chhattabal and Mehjoor Nagar today. He said that nobody was injured in any incident of stone pelting today. IGP Kashmir said that while continuing its crackdown against the stone pelters, Police today detained 25 more youth. With today's arrests, Police have arrested and detained a total of 50 youth, all of them allegedly involved in incidents of stone pelting, in Srinagar in the last two days. IGP admitted that the impact of Geelani-sponsored shutdown was substantial in Srinagar and some other major townships. Independent reports, however, said that most of the shops and business establishments remained closed and commercial traffic was off the road. Officials admitted that attendance was "extremely thin" in government offices in Srinagar as well as other district and Tehsil headquarters in Valley. With Geelani being admitted in SKIMS, Soura, authorities did not permit Chairman of so-called moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and few other separatist leaders to move out of their respective residential houses. Still, a number of the separatist activists, including the outlawed Dukhtaraan-e-Millat chief, Asiya Andrabi, called on the bereaved family at Sayeeda Kadala and addressed the condolence meetings. According to these independent reports, thin groups of demonstrators clashed with Police at Bagiyas, Chhattabal and Mehjoor Nagar today. Some official as well as private vehicles were hit but there were no reports of any remarkable damage. Reports said that there were a couple of minor incidents in Anantnag and Baramulla. Notwithstanding shutdown in most of the capital city localities, little tension was visible in uptown today. IGP Kashmir said that Tufail Ahmed Matoo's post mortem report was still awaited from the team of doctors.
