All exams cancelled at Baba Ghulam Shah University, students demand VC's removal
Chaos, lawlessness continue at campus

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 14: Agitated over the yesterday's incident of firing in the air and lathicharge on them, students of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University have demanded removal of vice-chancellor Choudhary Masud Ahmad and registration of FIR against police and campus authorities.
A total chaos and lawlessness prevailed at the campus, with the students demanding chief minister Omar Abdullah's intervention. Amidst raising of anti-VC slogans at the campus in Rajouri, they said they were protesting peacefully yesterday and the use of police force against them was uncalled-for.
They said since Choudhary had retired as ADGP, the Rajouri police were at his beck and call.
Even as the students continued with their hunger strike and protests for the fourth consecutive day today, the university authorities postponed all exams, which were to commence from today and end in August. To end the strike and bring normalcy back to the campus, the authorities also closed the hostel and mess, besides announcing summer vacations. A notification in this regard was issued today.
The students, however, refused to go homes, saying their protest would continue till their demands were met. They were yesterday demanding continuance of the system of re-evaluation and grace marks when police had opened firing in the air and lathicharged them.
Taking serious note of the police action, which they said was totally unprovoked, students said they would only speak to the chief minister in this regard and not to any of the university authorities, who had used police force against them. "We are ready to die and will not end our strike till the CM comes here," they said in one voice.
"We have given money to take admission in the university. We have not come here to be treated like militants, or criminals," they asserted, saying SOG men, who were trained to fight terrorists, were called to beat them.
They raised slogans: "VC Hatao, CM Bulao, University Bachao" (remove VC, call CM, save University). The protest is being held by engineering and post-graduate students.
They also demanded registration of FIR against the university authorities and the SOG men, who had lathicharged them without any fault of theirs.
" They said the authorities wanted to silence their voice by announcing vacations and ordering closure of hostel and mess. The university has put locks on our rooms in the hostel and closed
mess so that we are forced to move out of the campus," they added.
The university had also stopped the supply of drinking water to them, they alleged.
They urged the chief minister to come to the campus and see their condition in the absence of accomodation, food and water.
Condemning the police lathicharge on the students, Pahari Students Forum president Abdul Qadir Khan and Beopar Mandal president Rajesh Gupta also demanded immediate removal of the vice-chancellor.
