EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 14: The recent murder of 10 year old Shalin Gupta son of Naresh Gupta in Naibasti, area of Jammu is not an isolated case of kidnapping for ransom in jammu, but third one of this nature in Jammu city in last fortnight.
According to reliable source, 15 days back a 6th standard student was kidnapped by two scooter borne youth from Barnai. The duo, one of whom was the neighbour of the boy, picked up Nishu after the school break at 1.30 pm and took him to an unknown destination in Kotbhalwal area.
They rang the father of Nishu, Shiban lal, a government employee residing in lane No. 11 Barnai and demanded Rs three lakh as ransom. Panic gripped the family when Nishu did not return home after school break on the fateful day. His mother in total desperation visited from one home to another in search of her child but to no avail.
On enquiry from school the incharge madam said that a youth had visited her class at 11am seeking half day leave for Nishu as he had to accompany his mother to a relative's home. However the teacher denied the permission on the ground that mother of child should herself approach the school for half day leave.
After the denial of permission the two youths waited outside the school and picked up Nishu after the break. The child could not raise the alarm as one of the youth who was involved in the kidnapping was his next door neighbour while another youth belonged to Bhalwal area.
After demanding ransom the family came to know of kidnapping. The father was asked to come along with money for safe release of his child. But when neighbours came to know that one of the youth was from their own locality, they pressurized his family to force the kidnappers to release the boy. Afraid of police action and threat by residents the relatives of kidnapped youth pressurized them to release the boy without any harm. Fearing police action the two youth left the boy somewhere in Bantalab and informed his parents about it. After the recovery of the kidnapped boy his parents tried to hush up the case but the neighbours forced him and an fir was registered in Domana police station. Later Police swing into action and arrested the duo who on their sustained interrogation admitted that they had kidnapped the boy for Rs 3 lakh ransom. Domana police after registering the case transferred it to Police Post Chinore for further investigation.
The sources said the two kidnappers were released two days back on bail. It has been also reported that prior to kidnapping of Shalin Gupta his kidnappers had tried to pick up Harpreet Singh S/O Sukhdev Singh an Executive Engineer from the same locality. But after raising an alarm the kidnappers fled from the area.
This reveals that law and order situation has worsened in Jammu city and the situation is no better than U.P and Bihar cities here which have worst crime record. The situation has deteriorated to such an extent that on Sunday 5 youth riding on two motor cycles tried to intercept a wagon r during broad day light on busy Akhnoor road. The Motor cyclist who were dead drunk chased the
wagon r from BSF school to tope bridge. However when two Army vehicles came from behind the youth signaled danger and let the wagon-r go.
What added to the worries of the wagon-r borne two youth that not a single policeman was at Naka near BSF. This shows how the situation is deteriorating in the winter capital and if the criminals are not given a check the Jammu may break the record of U.P and Bihar in crime too.
