Cong's new catchword: Rly link for Poonch

POONCH, June 14: Union Minister of State for Kashmir Affairs, Mr Prithivi Raj Chouhan today said that the possibility of linking border district Poonch through Railways was being explored.
Addressing a public meeting, here today, Chouhan said that Railways was the best means for accelerating development, adding that connecting far-flung areas through railways, including border areas could go a long way in setting in the pace of socioeconomic development.
Minister for Health and Medical Education, R S Chib, Jammu Kashmir PCC Chief, Saif-u-din Soz and Vice Chairman Gujjar and Bakwarwal Welfare Board, Bashir Ahmed Naz were also present on the occasion.
Chouhan also referred to the proposed road for linking Poonch with world famous Gulmarg resort in the Valley. He said the work on the historical Mughal road was in full swing and feasibility for connecting Loren area of border district Poonch with Gulmarg was also being studied. He said the proposed road would help in promoting tourism, trade and commerce with the rest of the state.
Earlier, PCC Chief in his address also referred to the
proposal about linking Poonch through Railways. He said that a survey for laying the Railway lines has been already conducted and the work for laying the same would be started in near future. He said that tourism potential areas of the district would be developed to attract tourists entering the state. He also asked the officers to formulate irrigation projects and assured early approval for the same from the central government.
Highlighting the efforts of the coalition government, Soz said that various measures have been taken to create employment opportunities for the youth. He said about 8000 youth of the state are being recruited under National Youth Core.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Medical Education, who is also Chairman DDB Poonch, listed various development projects completed in the district. He said focused attention was being laid on promoting economic activities by exploring tourism potential in the area. He said agriculture and allied activities, particularly potential activities like cattle and sheep rearing was being encouraged on modern lines.
Referring to the recent visit of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Chib said that he announced a series of packages for the uplift of Tribal and Pahari speaking people of the sate. He said PM announced that 8000 students from the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch would be sent for vocational training both within and outside the state.
