Govt. serious to curb charas cultivation on fields | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, June 15: Farmers in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir have started carrying out paddy transplantation, Department of Agriculture had pressed into service farm experts from the department and the Agriculture Universities for assisting farmers in using all precautions while completing sowing practices. State Government sources said that paddy cultivation has been delayed because of weather related problems. They said, "In the Kashmir valley there has been no respite from torrential rain and in the Jammu region, hot and humid temperature has added to woes of farmers". State Government has attached to agriculture it has decided to initiate measures for preventing state from witnessing any major loss of production. Government has decided to give thrust to paddy-wheat rotation techniques which have been introduced from current year. Agricultural Department has gone ahead with acquisition of three units of paddy transplanters for mass demonstration during current kharief season. Likewise, department has also procured fourteen wheat thrashers for popularizing paddy wheat rotation and farm mechanization. About nine thousand kanals of land has been covered under this scheme during just ended Rabi season. Government is providing subsidy on purchase of agricultural machinery and farm equipments such as sprayers, irrigation pump sets, tillers, thrashers, shellers, reapers, potato planters, seed cum fertilizer drills etc in order to encourage farm mechanization. In respect of tractors, amount of subsidy is as high as Rs. 45,000. For horticulture farm management equipment and power tillers the subsidy amount is Rs.15000. For seed cum fertilizer drills, the amount of subsidy is Rs.20, 000 and on potato planters, potato diggers, strip till drill, Dal mill etc the amount of subsidy is Rs.15000. Departmnt of Agriculture has requested police, excise and crime departments to initiate firm steps against those farmers who had converted paddy and wheat farms into charas growing fields. Official sources said that the police have been directed to book those found cultivating charas under Public Safety Act. Sources said that Government will provide additional funds and tools to police and excise departments for carrying out operation destruction of charas fields. Government has received reports that large chunks of agricultural lands in south Kashmir had been used for charas cultivation after farmers found it more lucrative than cultivation of paddy and wheat crops. Concerned agencies have been directed to stop giving subsidies on purchase of farm equipments to those farmers who are found engaging in charas cultivation.
