Jammu region witnesses drop in crime graph, says police | | | early times report JAMMU, June 15: Even as the City of Temples was Saturday rocked with the state's first murder for ransom, there has been an overall decline in the crime graph in the region. A senior police officer also denied the allegations that a nexus had developed between police and organised gangs of criminals. On the contrary, there had been an overall decrease in the number of criminal incidents, he added. The officer said police were able to control the crime mainly because of public cooperation, registration of FIRs through SMS and strict action against criminals. He said 427 murder cases were registered in 2001, 465 in 2002, 431 in 2003, 361 in 2004, 284 in 2005, 206 in 2006, 149 in 2007, 133 in 2008, 123 in 2009 and 34 in the first five months of the current year. Attempt to murder cases had also showed a steady decline, he added. He said 720 attempt to murder cases were registered in 2001, 647 in 2002, 622 in 2003, 519 in 2004, 430 in 2005, 380 in 2006, 305 in 2007, 305 in 2008, 276 in 2009 and 114 in the first five months of the current year. The officer said seven decoity cases were registered in 2001, 14 in 2002, nine in 2003, nine in 2004, three in 2005, five in 2006, 10 in 2007, two in 2008, one in 2009 and one this year. 20 robbery cases were registered in 2001, 18 in 2002, 23 in 2003, 11 in 2004, 11 in 2006, 16 in 2007, 13 in 2008, six in 2009 and only one this year, he added. He said very less burglary cases were registered this year. There was, however, always a scope for improvement, he added, saying healthy feedback from public was always taken by the organization in the right perspective. During recently held crime review meetings of all SHOs of rural and city police stations and supervisory officers of Jammu district, IGP, Dr Ashok Gupta had issued instructions to give more thrust on proactive policing by taking preventive action suo moto, launching special drives against organized crime and immediate response to public complaints.
