Arrangements for Mata Khir Bhawani inspected | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, June 15: Chairman-Trustee J&K Dharmarth Council, Dr. Karan Singh personally inspected arrangements for Mata Khir Bhawani Mela at Tul-Mula, Ganderbal, Kashmir scheduled for 19 June. Khir Bhavani shrine serves as the venue for an annual festival held in May-June, on the occasion of Jesht Ashtami. During this festival, a large number of Hindus visit the temple to seek blessings of the Goddess. Another occasion on which the Khir Bhavani temple gains special importance is Shukla Paksh Ashtami. On this day havans/yagnas are performed to invoke the blessings of the Goddess. Tradition says that Mother Ragnya desired that Khir Bhavani Mandir be her seat in Kashmir. And this wish was conveyed in a dream to a Kashmiri Pandit, Raghunath Gadroo. The temple of Ragnya Devi is called "Khir Bhawani" because numerous devotees offer kheer (pudding made of milk and cooked rice) to the sacred spring. General belief among the Hindus of Kashmir is that if milk and kheer offered to the spring turn to black color it is a warning of some impending disaster. Maharaja Pratap Singh got the temple constructed in 1912. Later, Maharaja Hari Singh undertook the repair and restoration work on the temple.
