Top cop turned VC now seeking political settlement; ignores Varsity issues
6/16/2010 1:02:45 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 15: Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU), Rajouri is in news these days, not for achievements but for agitation of University students for the want of elusive better administration and violent retaliation by police force at the behest of the University administration.
Few days ago, the issue came to the fore when dozens of the peacefully protesting students were injured after brutal cane charging by the police.
The students were demanding relative grading, transparency in examination (rechecking and revaluation), introduction of supplementary examination system, removal of gate, a close door meeting with the Vice Chancellor BGSBU, and relevant grace in those exams which were out of syllabus besides other demands.
The students were protesting peacefully when the police was called to disperse the students sitting on "Hunger Strike".
The University administration instead of fulfilling or simly looking into the demands announced Summer Vacations to diffuse the protests.
The protesting students of the university stated "had the Vice Chancellor Masud Choudhary from academic circle, he would not resorted to harsh police action". He was police personnel prior to joining the University as VC, so he deemed it proper to diffuse the situation by harsh method, feel the aggrieved students community.
The students also stated that he has got extension on the post and is now seeking for a political settlement in the ruling Congress Party.
This was also the reason that the VC was seen involved in political activities rather than dealing with the day to day issues of the students and work for providing quality education to them.
An insider claimed that the University administration is inexperienced to the deal with the issues of the students. The Registrar of the University was promoted from lecturer ship and he is very young to shoulder such a huge responsibility.
Castigating the media, the protesters also said that local media was not interested in highlighting the issues of the student community. And media is based in the capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar.
This was also one of the reasons that the university administrations unleashed the reign of terror on the hapless students.
It is pertinent to mention here that on June 13 police cane charged the students sitting on Hunger Strike. The police also fired tear gas shells and bullets on the students. It resulted in injuring 70 students including girls.
The students also stated that unless their demands were not met, the protests would continue in one form or the other.
