| 'Which agency patronizes stone pelting' | | | JAMMU : The Law minister, Ali Muhammad Sagar said on Monday that some `agencies' were creating trouble in Srinagar city. Sagar was referring to the stone pelters, who, according to him, were sponsored, funded and patronized by some agencies.
Stone pelting has been giving sleepless nights to the authorities for the past three years. Scores of statements have also been issued. During the budget session of the legislative assembly, the Chief Minister said that the stone pelters and their `masters' had been identified. He even promised strict action against them. A similar statement came from the Law Minister's office. He went to the extent of accusing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of patronizing the stone pelters. He also promised stern action against them. This was followed by a statement of the DGP. He said the stone pelters were funded by unscrupulous elements, mostly kerosene dealers, who made a fortune by creating trouble in the city and towns.
Action was taken but not against the persons who `patronize' the process. Hundreds of youth in the age group of 16-30 were picked up from various places. Some were detained under Public Safety Act (PSA) as well. But strangely enough, the arrestees did not include any member of the PDP, who according to the Law Minister patronize the stone pelters. Similarly no kerosene dealer was held for his role in stone pelting.
After two months the blame has shifted. The Law Minister now believes that some agencies were sponsoring stone pelting. Agency is a loaded word. It is interpreted differently by different people depending upon their perception. For a commoner `agency' means an intelligence organization like the CID, IB, RAW and the list is endless. Which particular agency has been indicted by the Law Minister?
The Law Minister must name the agency and take appropriate action against it, if can afford that. Sagar knows he cannot do that for obvious reasons. He, therefore, has done what National Conference has been doing for the past six decades.
However, this time neither changed the bottles nor the wine. The founder of NC, Sher-e-Kashmir would silence his opponents by dubbing them as IB agents. This is exactly what Sagar has done now.
Sagar has to bear in mind that stone pelting of 2008-09 was different. The reasons for this year's stone pelting are different. The government has failed on all fronts and to cover up its failure, the authorities blame the PDP, kerosene dealers and the `agencies'.
