Political leadership to decide on AFSPA: PDP | | | JAMMU: Advocating revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today said though army commanders are free to air their opinion, it is the political leadership that will decide on the issue. "It is political leadership of the country to decide on revocation of the AFSPA. Army cannot decide it," PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti told reporters here. She was reacting to the statement made by Northern Army Commander Lt General B S Jaswal, who, defending the AFSPA, had reportedly said that "the provisions of AFSPA are pious" and should not be touched. He had also compared the Act to a religious book. "Fortunately, we are living in a democratic country where army can have its opinion but the decision is taken by the political leadership. We believe that army is subordinate to political leadership of the country," she said. The PDP chief said, "The Prime Minister's constituted working group on center-state relations has recommended the revocation of APSPA. Further as per the intelligence reports that only 500 militants are active in the state has strengthen the demand to revoke AFSPA," adding "Now it is up to political leadership to decide on it." She said that the situation was totally different when AFSPA was brought to Jammu and Kashmir. "Two decades back the law was brought when militants in thousands were operating in the state but at present only 500 militants are active. There is a whole lot of change in the situation and the need of the hour is to revoke this law," Mehbooba added. She said that there are few black sheep in the Army as well who have vested interests and don't want the situation to get normal and are trying to keep the pot boiling in Valley.
