SAD demands 'exemplary' punishment for accused | | |
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 16: Demanding "exemplary punishment" to the accused to Shaleen Gupta murder case, Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar)-a frontline Sikh organisation-today asked the state government to hold a "fool-proof" inquiry against the political patronization of criminals. "As per media reports and statements of family members, a political leader had made a phone call to the Police for release of one of the accused person from custody. It is necessitated to hold thorough probe into the whole incident and name of such political leaders, who had tried to give political cover to criminals, should be made public," Jaspal Singh Mangal, national vice president SAD told reporters here. The Akali leader asserted, "Goondaism cannot sustain for long without protection from the belt force at some level and patronage by the crooked politicians who have proved themselves more as a public burden rather than the salvager of public problems. If the administration sincerely wants to deliver justice to victim family, it should disclose the name of the political leader who influenced the Police for release of accused." "One of the accused had earlier been involved in one such case of extraction of money from the son of an engineer who, fortunately, had managed to slip away from the clutches of notorious elements. It was to utter dismay that the FIR had not bothered to register an FIR against him and had released the criminal under political pressure," he alleged. He made a fervent appeal to the Sikh parents to reign in and check the "unholy activities" of their wards and urged for maintaining brotherhood and communal harmony. "Isolated individual acts should have no bearing on any particular community as a whole," he asserted while paying tribute to the departed soul. He also took the opportunity to demand amendment in the board of enumeration concerned with the general masses.
