Early Times Report
Akhnoor, June 16: Raj Tilak Celebration Committee met at Jia Pota today for last minute fine tuning of the preparation of celebration of 189th anniversary of foundation of Jammu & Kashmir by an act of Raj Tilak of Raja Gulab Singh by Maharaja Ranjit Singh on 17 June 1822. The stage is all set to celebrate a historically memorable event of 4th of Har 1879 and to relive the grand ceremony and historical event of coronation of Ist emperor of J&K, Said K P Singh, the Chairman of the Committee. Coronation of Maharaja Gulab Singh was done at this historic Dogra heritage site188 years ago. This eventually led to the formation of a largest North Indian border state of Indian Union.
Raja a Rajgan, Ranjit Dev ruled over the vast Kingdom of Jammu which included Sialkot & major part of Himachal from 17 40 to 1782. His rule has been hailed as the 'Golden Era' of peace & prosperity of the 18th century. After his death the empire disintegrated into 22 smaller principalities, each affiliated to Punjab empire in some form or the other. It was Maharaja Gulab Singh who united them all under his rule.
After Maharaja Ranjit Singh captured Kashmir from Afghans in 1919, he planned to extend his suzerainty up to Pir Panjal in the North and up to Kabul in the North West. But due to inhospitable geographical & climatic conditions it was extremely difficult to exercise full direct control from Lahore. He therefore declared one of his bravest and ablest General as ruler of Jammu in 1822 and tasked him to consolidate the Jammu empire. Maharaja Gulab Singh was a valiant warrior, a great general and master military strategist who not only did what his master desired but extended the frontiers of J&K state up to Tibet and Afghanistan. After 36 years of glorious rule from 1822 to 1858, Gulab Singh left behind an independent, powerful, united and communally harmonious state to soon become a democratic and prosperous state of India. To celebrate 189th Coronation Day in a most befitting manner, Raj Tilak Celebration Committee Akhnoor has invited Sh Sham Lal Sharma, Honb'le Health Minister as Chief Guest and Sh Madan Lal Sharma, Honb'le MP as Guest of Honour. Both being local leaders and public representatives have played active role in the development of infrastructure at Jia Pota for the promotion of Historical Tourism. Many other dignitaries and Heads of Social Organizations have been invited. Maharaja Gulab Singh memorial Trust will be installing statues of Maharaja Gulab Singh & Maharaja Ranjit Singh very shortly at this site said K P Singh for which Shila Nias & Bhumi Pujan rituals will be performed tomorrow, said K P Singh. This celebration is not only a tribute to the great son of the soil but an inspiration to one and all to be nationalist to the core and to live and work for unity and integrity of J&K with a view to promote peace & prosperity in the state. Public is requested to participate in large numbers to celebrate the foundation and Coronation Day for preservation of our own rich history, culture and heritage. The history of 9th century of India is written with the blood of martyrs of 1857 war of independence. Hailed as most turbulent era of political and administrative consolidation of British empire, Punjab empire under Maharaja Ranjit Singh & J&K under Maharaja Gulab Singh were relatively peaceful and prosperous because of these illustrious rulers. They deserve the tributes of nation said K P Singh.
