EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 17: As the time nears for announcing the name of a Vice Chancellor for Central University, the issue has again started boiling among the students as well as other organizations for a pressure on the administration to choose 'someone local'.
A name that has lately started making rounds for a reference for being a local and having vast experience in the field of academics and administration is of Prof Lalit Magotra, retired as professor of physic Jammu University and formerly Head of Physics Department and Dean Faculty of Science. Besides students organizations and some of the individuals related to social and political excellence in the region, others also when queried over Lalit's candidature suiting the VC's post, all presented a unanimous 'yes'.
"It is quite surprising why Prof Magotra's name did not surface at the very outset in this issue. He is multi-faceted personality having vast and elaborate experience in academics and is the best choice," said Prof Veena Gupta, professor, Jammu University.
Even the politician-turned-academicians admit that since there are some good names that can be considered for the post of CU VC, Lalit Magotra's name holds top priority. Chair Professor Maharaja Gulab Singh Chair, Hari Om when asked for his view point said, "Jammu is a forte of high intelligentsia in academics. Any body can serve the post beautifully here, be it Lalit Magotra or anybody else. The main issue is that the person should be of the local origin". As per Professor Magotra's credential, his academic career spanning 35 years include acquiring different positions as Dean Faculty of Sciences, Jammu University, Head of Department Computer Science & IT, Head of the Physics & Electronic Department and Assistant Director Jammu and Kashmir Forensic Sciences Laboratory.
His other significant effort also included him becoming part of International Collaborative Project in High Energy Physics named Alice in Cern, Geneva. Recipient of 4 International Fellowships from Sweden and Germany, Lalit Magotra's most important aspect relates to him being the doyen of promotion of Dogri in Jammu also.
"It would be prestigious assignment for me if my name is considered for the candidature, "said Prof Lalit Magotra on this view point adding, "At least Jammu people would not find themselves wanting of a perfect candidate for the post".
