Fare unfair, Jmu-Chd pvt. transportation takes passengers for a ride
6/18/2010 12:01:05 AM

SIDDHARTH
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 17: There is a startling revelation over the ferrying of the passengers from Jammu to Chandigarh that take their journey through the private transportation on an assurance to be dropped at Chandigarh, but are made to disembark at Mohali, thus putting them to great hardships.
The disclosure of the facts behind this reason came to light when a conductor of a bus requesting anonymity said that 90 percent of the transporters plying their buses on Jammu-Chandigarh do not possess valid permits and hence have to take to recourse at Mohali while dropping the passengers there instead of their actual destination at Chandigarh.
Such practice is being enacted in connivance with police and traffic authorities who are the shareholders for the money paid to them for evading the regulation, said Hardeep Singh (name changed) the conductor of the private bus who frequently run up and down on the route.
As per the design of the system, all passengers to board the bus for Jammu from Chandigarh are picked up from Sector 22 in tempos and are ferried to Mohali where the buses allotted to them wait. Here they are given their respective bus numbers and seats as people board in to leave for Jammu.
Since the permits allotted to such transporters are from Jammu and Kashmir to Punjab only , hence they are not allowed entry into the Chandigarh for which they have to resort to such practice of picking Jammu bound passengers from Chandigarh, said Nittin Sarolia, a regular passenger with such transportation who is a businessman quite often frequenting Jammu-Chandigarh for merchandise purposes.
Though the structure may not be much of botheration for the people as the system of commuting them from Chandigarh to Mohali and vice versa is not a grievance, but holds a reason for young girls to grumble on it.
A bus generally lands at Mohali around 4.30 am in the morning which is still dark.
Moving around for our destinations at such hours is full of threat that attaches many apprehensions of anything going wrong anytime which we fear very much, laments Koyal Manhas, 22, a media adviser with Blaupunkt, Chandigarh.
Besides the fare charged by these buses vary as per bus drivers' whims which too is a cause of concern that put passengers in fix all the time.
However, what could be the reason of fear or an apprehension attached to anything, this mismanagement by the authorities both at Jammu and Kashmir as well as Chandigarh is a serious accusation that needs to be immediately seen through for safe traveling of the passengers as Chandigarh is the one nearest outlet in the northern India for students in Jammu and Kashmir to venture out frequently for their higher studies or jobs.
