J&K waits Centre's nod for raising 5 police Bns | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 17: A requisition was made by the state to the Centre over an year back to raise five additional police battalions. Given the fact that J&K police are short of men to take on militants and deal with normal Crime, the union government has still not taken any decision on it. The fate of the written request made in this regard was still not known, official sources said. "We hope the sanction to come after about six months because by that time the training of the men of five battalions, raised during the last four years, will be over," the sources added. Asked to comment on the recent police recruitment rallies in different parts of the state, sources clarified that these rallies were not meant for raising new battalions but for filling the vacant posts in executive cadres. These recruitment rallies were being held to fill over 5,000 posts which had fallen vacant due to the retirement of cops, the sources added. Sources said at least 19 new police battalions were needed if police were to replace paramilitary forces and army in counter-insurgency operations. The law and order problem had added a new dimension after the separatists started inciting people to stage demonstrations and indulge in violence while protesting against human rights violations, or against any other issue, the sources added. Sources said if the Centre had any plan to withdraw troops and para-military forces from civilian areas after giving the responsibility to police to handle law and order and anti-insurgency operations, it should start raising new police battalions right now.
