Varun Sahni's leadership taking Institution towards doom | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 17: The University of Jammu (JU), which was once touching newer heights in the field of academics and other spheres, is at its lowest ebb and has come close to virtual collapse on several front courtesy, unfortunate leadership of the Vice Chancellor and inability of senior administrators. Precisely, a year and half has passed since Prof Varun Sahni took over as Vice Chancellor of JU but, the things have completely changed over this period as he failed to come up to the expectations mainly because of his slackness and inability to take decisions sharply which must be one of his traits at as vice chancellor of the University. Besides, the incompetency of the senior administrators holding key positions of the University like Registrar Dr P S Pathania and Dean Academic Affairs (DAA) Prof R D Sharma have turned the institution into a mad house, with chaotic scene and confusion prevaling all over. Whereas, on the other hand, the Director, Colleges Development Council, Prof Rajive Gupta is reportedly, behaving like an 'agent' at the hands of the private affiliated colleges of the University. It is visible from his actions and the work that he is working day and night to ensure that no seat is left vacant in any of the private affiliated colleges without even taking into account pros and cons of the same. According to highly placed sources, he is hell bent to destroy the institution allegedly by devising various methods to benefit the owners of private colleges without even caring for the standards and norms of the University. The recent decision of University authorities to roll back the scheme of entrance examination for PG admissions for the time being mainly because of the inability and lack of planning at the end of Dean Academic Affairs Prof R D Sharma. Even, Custodian of the University, Registrar Dr P S Pathania failed to keep track on the position that led to disastrous decision of rolling back decision on PG entrance. On one hand, where University of Kashmir (KU) scaling new heights under the leadership of Prof Reyaz Punjabi, the JU is moving fast towards its doom under the guidance of Prof Sahni. Pertinently, the University was busy in preparing for entrance based admissions since eight months and in the process several meaningless meetings were called but still the end product was a failure. Authoritative sources divulged that the Director CDC is busy in exploiting the ignorance of incumbent Vice Chancellor owing to which he managed to bring down the qualifying percentage for admission to BBA/BCA courses by five percent. Earlier, it was fixed at 50 percent but now it has been made 45 percent just to ensure that no private college would suffer on the account of vacant seats. Notably, political leaders including the small timers as well as the ministers are having big stakes in the private colleges and the Director CDC is just facilitating their interests but ignoring his duties. Not only in BBA/BCA he offered sops to private colleges but reliably, he has also managed to bring down the qualifying percentage to 40 percent from the previous figure of 45 percent again only to appease the political bosses for the sake of his appointment as JU Vice Chancellor after Prof Sahni.Surprisingly, the latter is turning blind eye to this messy state of affairs on all the fronts. Meanwhile, the eminent academicians have reacted sharply over the failure of JU in conduct of entrance for PG admissions and called it as a complete failure of administrative machinery. They have expressed that Vice Chancellor and his administrators, including Registrar and Dean Academic Affairs, should tender their resignations on moral ground.
They also took Director CDC to task for virtually turning his office into a kiosk as he has playing with the career of thousands of innocent students and future of the society by allowing below average students to undertake professional courses like BBA/BCA. It is a questionable decision as to why Prof Gupta took this step and what the motive was, they added. They, however, urged the Chancellor, also the Governor, N N Vohra and Prof Chancellor (Chief Minister) Omar Abdullah to immediately intervene into the matter to save the University from disaster which seems inevitable under the leadership of Prof Varun Sahni. The senior and eminent academicians also urged the prominent citizens and leaders of the region to use their influence to save the University from debacle.
