Chief Minister Omar Abdullah not in command | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, June 17: people's Democratic Party leaders Mufti Mohd Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti are not just Pakistan and militant-friendly. They are also rabble-rousers. They have developed the art of interpreting trivial incidents in lurid colours so as to inflame popular feelings and their objective always is to instigate the common Kashmiri Muslims against India. They thrive on divisive and communal politics. They, like all the Kashmiri separatists, see in the divisive politics an opportunity that helps them promote their selfish intentions. Hence, no sane person would ever endorse the line they have adopted, especially after November 2005, when they were forced by the Congress to abdicate the state power. However, one cannot overlook what the Muftis have been saying since last Sunday regarding the prevailing anarchical conditions both in Jammu and Kashmir. For, Mufti Sayeed does hit the nail on the head when he says that Srinagar has become a killing field and Jammu has been taken over by criminals. Similarly, Mehbooba Mufti doesn't cross the line when she interprets the kidnapping and murder of ten year boy Shaleen in Jammu for ransom the immediate fallout of the freedom the anti-social elements now enjoy. Such a positive comment about the Muftis may surprise those opposed to the kind of politics they have been indulging. They may also take their comments to mean a cunning strategy adopted by the Muftis to disgrace the National Conference and the National Conference-led government. The opponents of the Muftis have every right to take any view. After all, the credentials of the Muftis are doubtful and it is an established fact. They do play dirty politics. But the situation as it prevails in Jammu and Srinagar does suggest that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has miserably failed to provide security to the people and that he is not in command. In Kashmir, it is the militants and anti-social elements who are ruling the roost. The militants are motivating the innocent Kashmiri youth to take the law into their hands, thus forcing the security forces to react - action that sometimes leads to the death of person/persons, including innocents. When someone dies, and it is happening almost everyday, the separatists order the people to organize bandh to remain in the limelight. As for the attitude of the Omar Abdullah government towards the separatists, who order people to observe bandh and paralyze the life in Kashmir, it watches all such developments as a mute spectator. Even a naïve would agree that there exists no government worth its name in the Kashmir Valley. It has abdicated its authority in favour of the merchants of death and destruction. The result is that the people's life has become insecure. The daily wagers; the auto, matador and taxi drivers; petty shopkeepers; tea stall and small dhaba owners, to mention only a few, have been suffering the most. Omar Abdullah, who does not know even the ABC of governance and who remains out of the state most of the time, instead of taking action against those instigating violence, attacks the security agencies and order action against the security forces personnel. The official attack against the security forces only demoralize the latter or lower their morale. It is no wonder that the security forces retaliate only in self-defence. The negative attitude of the Chief Minister and his coterie towards those charged with the responsibility of tackling ultras, maintaining law and order and defending the national unity and integrity has further vitiated the atmosphere in Kashmir and added to the woes of the common Kashmiris, who only want peace. The truth is that it is none other than Omar Abdullah who is responsible for the prevailing anarchical situation not only in Kashmir but also in Jammu, which has become insecure and where the anti-social elements are reigning supreme. The suffering people do not cross the Lakshman Rekha when they say that politicians and certain powerful police officials are not only shielding criminals, but also availing themselves of their services to enrich themselves at the cost of the state and the people. It can be said that Omar Abdullah has become a liability. He has failed as a politician. He has failed as an administrator as well. It is time for the authorities in New Delhi to intervene without losing a single moment. Jammu and Kashmir is a sensitive border state. It is also a terrorist and separatist-infested state. It needs a mature politician-cum-sound administrator. Continuation of Omar Abdullah as executive head of the state is neither in the people's interest nor in the interest of the Indian State. The experiment has failed because the Chief Minister has failed the people, failed the state and failed the Indian State in Jammu and Kashmir.
