Karan Singh takes measures to set right Dharamarth Trust | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 18: On June 7, the Early Times carried a story under the caption "Pujaris, KD, SSH up in revolt against Dharamarth Trust president". The story was, in fact, an analysis of the various reports, which appeared in a number of Jammu-based dailies and a couple of national dailies. The report catalogued all the reasons which had led to the strike in the historic Shri Raghunath Temple, Jammu. "Pujaris" of the temple had gone on strike, thus causing injury to the devotees, who throng this temple in their thousands everyday to offer prayers and get solace. The report in The Early Times was based on the allegations leveled by certain "Pujaris" and a few organizations, including the allegations that there were elements in the Trust who were exploiting their position to make easy money by resorting to questionable methods. Some of them used the extreme word "loot". The objective of the report was to put things in perspective so that corrective measures were taken to restore the Shri Raghunath Temple to its pristine glory and no devotee carried wrong impression about the functioning of the Dharamarth Trust. The purpose of the story was not to malign anybody. The Early Times stands vindicated. The decisions taken by the "full Council", chaired by Chairman Trustee Dr Karan Singh on Thursday at Srinagar, do establish that whatever the Early Times reported in the form of news analysis was more than correct. Some of the decisions taken unanimously by the full council include the decision to accept the demand of the Pujaris regarding hike in their monthly salaries; increase in the salaries of all the employees of the Trust so that none in the Trust gets a salary less than what is provided by the government laws on the subject; removal of Administrator-cum-supervisor-cum-manager of the Pujaris-cum-Pujari of a temple within the premises of Shri Raghunath Temple Darshan Sharma and his attachment with Trust office; and appointment of the senior most Pujari in the Shri Raghunath Temple as head Pujari. The full council also decided to appoint a new administrator as well as a new supervisor so that the practice of a single person holding more than one position is stopped as this practice was responsible for the various ills afflicting the famous temple. What was highly significant was the decision that Darshan Sharma would work under the direct control and supervision of the Trust and not under the Trust president. This decision and the decision to remove Darshan Sharma from the Shri Raghunath Temple speak for themselves. No wonder that the decisions of the full council has been appreciated by the "aggrieved Pujaris" and sent a clear signal to everyone in the Trust that Dr Karan Singh means business and that the council would not tolerate any undesirable activity. Now that the full council has taken appropriate decisions to streamline the working in the Shri Raghunath Temple, it is imperative for the "Pujaris" to discharge their duties to the best of their capacity and ability. There are reports that certain "Pujaris" charge money for offering "Parsad" and performing "Puja". This practice must be put to an end. They should also abandon the "Thali" system, as it induces Pujaris and others connected with the temple administration to misappropriate the offerings.
