IMFA in pathetic condition due to neglect of Govt | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 19: Our state has the vast potential to become artistic hub of the country, but to utter dismay, lack of state government's support and encouragement is hampering the growth of artistic and cultural activities in the state. Our state has two institutes for promotion of art and culture namely Institute of Music and Fine Arts (IMFA) at Jammu and Srinagar. But both these institutes are competing among themselves, not for excellence but for which of them in worst condition. The IMFA building in Talab Tillo area of Jammu is in dilapidated condition and was never renovated since its inception. Students and staff of the college informed that building is in shambles and could collapse anytime and they are living under constant threat to their lives, courtesy Cultural Academy and State government. Both are blaming each other for the present messy condition. Institute of Music and Fine Arts, Jammu was established in 1965 for promotion of courses in different streams of Music and Fine Arts. This institute remained a centre of only hobby classes and other certificate courses for about nine years under the supervision of Jammu Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages (JKAACL). In 1974, the institute was affiliated to the Jammu University for providing 4 years Degree Course in Music and Fine Arts in different fields of Arts including Vocal music, Sitar, Tabla, Dance, Painting, Sculpture, and applied Arts. The building housing the institute is a heritage building, which was once owned by Raja of Poonch. And it was handed over to the Estate department of the State government. State government later on handed over to Cultural Academy for establishing a prestigious institute of music and fine arts. Interestingly, three year ago the state government had sanctioned rupees 69 lakhs, to renovate the building; the work could not be started as it was decided that it was handed over to the University of Jammu two years ago. The matter is under process and hence renovation works could not materialize. When contacted to the Principal IMFA, Abhinaya Kemmu said that this institute was affiliated to Jammu University and state government provided funds through the Cultural Academy. She further said that faculty was well qualified to refine the talent of the state, but lack of infrastructural facilities was major stumbling block in its progress. She further said the Cultural Academy was going to handover IMFA to Jammu University, the same was under process from past two years. Secretary Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages Zafar Iqbal Manhas said that "we were equally concern about the plight of said institute. Academy had asked many times to college authorities to identify alternative building and Academy would provide all assistance to administration, but on their part no proposal has been sent so far.
