Dogri stands knocking DDE's gates in JU for an entry | | | ARTEEV SHARMA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 19: Even after its inclusion in eighth schedule of India's Constitution since December 22, 2003, Dogri still is struggling on the crossroads of basic recognition for survival because of official apathy. Call it reluctance or callousness on the part of the Department of Dogri in Jammu University, the much-talked proposal of the varsity to introduce the subject at Post Graduate level through Directorate of Distance Education still hangs in balance. Reason being that the Department of Dogri having failed to meet the deadline given by the Directorate of Distance Education vis-à-vis formulation of study materials to be provided to the students immediately after the commencement of the academic session. Sources said that the Directorate of Distance Education had fixed June 10 as the deadline for Dogri department for compilation of study material. "The varsity's Distance Education department had written to the Department of Dogri for preparation of study material about three and half month back and it had fixed June 10 as deadline for this purpose but the department has yet to start work on formation of study material," sources said, adding "Former Head of Dogri Department, Prof Veena Gupta was appointed as coordinator for this task." "It was due to laid back attitude of the Dogri department that work on study material has yet not been started which may force Directorate of Distance Education to suspend its proposal to introduce Dogri at PG level this year," maintained sources. "The Department of Dogri was asked to prepare study material within three months but they failed to meet the deadline which was fixed to June 10. We have discussed the matter with the department and they have assured us that they would provide study material soon," Director Distance Education (DDE) Meenakshi Kilam said. "As soon as we receive study material we would send it for printing on priority basis so that the Dogri subject is introduced on Post Graduate level through DDE this year." She however, said that the DDE has enough time and the subject would definitely be introduced at PG level this year. It may be mentioned here that Jammu University Council had given its approval for introducing Dogri at PG level through Distance education mode in 2009. When contacted, Veena Gupta admitted that the department had missed the deadline and said, "It is a lengthy process and it requires atleast six months. If all goes well, we will finalize the study material by July 8, 2010." "We do have other liabilities also and the preparation of study material is a time consuming process as it requires modification, addition and deletion," she maintained. She however, claimed that the Dogri would definitely be introduced at PG level through DDE from this year.
