Victims of communalism promoting communalism in Kashmir | | | RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 19: Hurriyat leaders have no constituency in Jammu and Ladakh. Hurriyat leaders have not taken any concrete step to create their constituency in these two regions. They have committed a blunder by not taking on board the people of Jammu and Ladakh. They should not think in terms of achieving independence for Jammu and Kashmir. India would not accept suggestion that seeks merger of Jammu and Kashmir with Pakistan. The Hurriyat leaders and other Kashmiri nationalists should forget Pakistan. They should also forget independence because India would neither grant independence to Jammu and Kashmir nor would it endorse the idea of Jammu and Kashmir becoming independent. New Delhi will not endorse the independence and Pakistan formulations because New Delhi takes these to mean manifestations of communal politics. New Delhi would endorse only secular formations. Hence, the Hurriyat leaders and other Kashmiri nationalists should put forth secular and democratic demands. Which are those secular and democratic demands? These demands are (1) ask New Delhi to withdraw all the laws it has extended to the state after August 9, 1953? Why should the Hurriyat leaders and other Kashmiri nationalists ask New Delhi to withdraw all those national laws from the state? Because these laws are not secular; because these laws are not democratic; because these laws are anti-Kashmir and anti-Kashmiriyat; because these laws have eroded the distinct identity of the Kashmiri Muslims; and because New Delhi has violated the terms of accession and brought Jammu and Kashmir under the ambit of undesirable and bad Central laws using foul means in order to merge the state fully with India. Hence, the Hurriyat leaders and other Kashmiri nationalists should demand an arrangement under which New Delhi would have no jurisdiction over Jammu and Kashmir except in matters other than defence, foreign affairs and communication. This is the most reasonable, highly democratic and fundamentally secular demand, which must be acceptable to New Delhi and the people of Jammu and Ladakh. Who has been preaching and advocating these formulations? Noted commentator, noted peace-monger, noted-conflict manager, noted secularist of secularists, noted democrat of democrats, noted writer and noted well-wisher and friend of Kashmiri Muslims Kuldip Nayar has been preaching and advocating these formulations. Who is Kuldip Nayar? Kuldip Nayar was a victim of communalism. He was a victim of the two-nation theory on the basis of which India was partitioned on communal lines in 1947 - partition that caused bloodshed and displacement of population on an unprecedented scale. He belonged to Sialkot and he fled from Pakistan in the wake of the country's communal partition to save his life. The ancestors of Burkha Dutt also belonged to Sialkot and they, too, had fled away from Pakistan for the same reasons. It is indeed an irony that those who fell victim to communalism and migrated to India to enjoy a secure and peaceful life are promoting the worst form of communalism and hailing the likes of the Mirwaiz, Yasin Malik and Shabbir Shah as liberals, secularists and democrats. It is ironical that the likes of Kuldip Nayar, who are enjoying all rights in India under the Indian Constitution, are condemning the Indian Constitution itself by describing it as an engine of oppression. It is disgusting that the likes of Kuldip Nayar are not only actively participating in such programmes as Safar-e-Azadi, but also guiding the ongoing separatist and communal movement in Kashmir. It is ironical that the likes of Kuldip Nayar are seeking to force down the throats of the unwilling people of Jammu and Ladakh an ideology they abhor and hate the most. The problem of India in Kashmir is not the Hurriyat leaders and other Kashmiri separatists and communalists. They can be tackled in no time as most of them are no more than self-styled leaders whose writ runs only in their respective mohallas. The problem of India is the likes of Kuldip Nayars who are fomenting troubles in Kashmir by giving respectability to the Kashmiri Muslim identity politics, which is no different from the politics the Muslim league indulged in before and after August 1947. And, remember there are many more Kuldip Nayars who migrated from Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir in 1947 and 1948. Some of them are found in Jammu as well. It is time for New Delhi to keep under check the activities of Kuldip Nayars so that menace of communalism and separatism in Kashmir is defeated. This is a must.
