Can police escape responsibility for the killing? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 19: Who killed 11-year-old Shalin Gupta? By now, it has become amply clear that Davender Singh and his accomplice killed the kid. But can the Police escape responsibility, the 'crusade' of the Police department to bring down the crime rate notwithstanding? The horrifying tale of an Engineer serving the Power Development Corporation (PDC) makes it difficult to exonerate the police. According to him Shalin Gupta fell to police inaction. A visibly shaken engineer, Sukhdev Singh approached the Gandhi Nagar police station four months ago (February 9) with a complaint about attempted kidnapping of his son by one Davender Singh from Nai Basti area. Sukhdev also apprised the senior superintendent of police (SSP) of the development through a written complaint and obtained a receipt from his office. However, the police say they have no knowledge of the complaint. The statement of the Police reflects the lethargy, inefficiency and indifference of the department. "He (Sukhdev Singh) is lying. Our records belie his claim", Police said. Giving details of the horrifying incident, Sukhdev said: "Promising my son a high breed puppy, he (Davender Singh) took my son to a park in Shastri Nagar area on February 8. My son waited as Davender went to get the puppy. Soon after, a youth came and told my son to accompany him as his elder brother (Jaspreet) was calling him. Knowing Jaspreet had gone for tuition; Harpreet smelt a rat and escaped. However, he came across Davender while on his way to home. Again my son was taken to the park. Davender told him he would grab the youth. My son obeyed. The youth appeared again with a dagger and tried to abduct my son. My son called Davender for help but he did not turn up. Meanwhile, a passerby rescued my son." Sukhdev went to police station Gandhi Nagar next morning (February 9). A police officer came to the locality but instead of taking Davender into custody resorted to gossip with him. Sukhdev called on the SSP on February 10 with his woeful tale. Sukhdev left Jammu for Srinagar in connection with his official duty and, therefore, could not follow the case. Had Sukhdev followed the case, or had the police taken appropriate action, an 11-year-old kid would not have lost his life. The youth who asked my son to accompany him near the Shastri Nagar park on February 8, according to Sukhdev could be Gagandeep, another accused in Shalin murder case. Sukhdev said he was often seen with Davender in the area. On June 10, the accused pounced on Shalin, a student of 5th standard in Air Force School, Satwari. Shalin was not lucky like Harpreet. Nobody turned up to save him. His body was recovered from Nai Basti area next morning.
