Health sector ailing in Ramban; needs attention | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 21: Dashing the high hopes and aspirations of the people, formation of new district of Ramban has failed the purpose for which it was created; this holds true as far as one look at the lackadaisical functioning of the health department is concerned. The mountainous Ramban district having maximum population in rural and hilly areas lacks the required hospitals and other infrastructural facilities. District Ramban has the population of about 2.34 lacs. As per the official sources, the district Ramban has sanctioned strength of ten Primary Health Centres (PHCs), out of which only eight are working. Locals often complain that the district hospital is no better than a PHC as it sans proper staff and infrastructure. Besides less number of PHCs and hospitals, lack of staff and infrastructure is also major concern for the locals. Sources further stated that at PHC Rajgarh, of the 17 sanctioned posts the available staff is 12, at Bhatni sanctioned posts are 18 but available staff is 9 only, at Deeda out of sanctioned 15, only 10 are posted, at Sangaldan sanctioned strength is 8 but 5 have been posted, at Trigam out of 18 sanctioned posts 13 are available at present , 19 sanctioned in Khari but available only 13, at PHC Ukhral out of 17 sanctioned posts present 10, and at Mangat there are 23 sanctioned post but only 16 staff members is posted here. The situation at district hospital Ramban is not either better since the number of working staff is far less than the sanctioned strength. Here only 51 persons are posted against the sanctioned posts of 128. At Nowgam and Alambas area the buildings for PHCs have been constructed but are not operational so far. One could understand the plight of health sector of the district, when even adequate medical staff is not available in already deficient hospitals. Besides deficiency of medical staff, also medical and surgical equipments are not available as per requirement even though the district hospital is situated on accident prone National Highway 1A. With the poor state of health sector in the district the locals are literally forced to go to either Jammu or Srinagar for for all kind of treatment. Despite repeated attempts, the Director Health Services could not be contacted for his comments on the ‘ailing’ health sector in Ramban district
