6/22/2010 12:29:31 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, June 21: Security has been tightened in Kashmir valley especially in Srinagar city where a one day seminar will be held on the 57th martyrdom day of founder President of Bhartiya Jan Sangh on June 23 in view of prevailing law and order situation in valley.
According to sources the authorities are not going to take any risk as many dignitaries including former Army Chief B.P Maliq and some top class diplomats, journalists and leaders of various political and social organizations are attending the seminar. The seminar is being orgainsed by Dr Shama Prasad Mukherji Foundation headed by BJP general secretary and MP Tarun Vijay.
This is for the first time that seminar is being held in Kashmir valley after the mysterious death of Mr. Mukherjee in Kashmir valley on June 23 1953 when he led the Praja Parishad Andolan in Jammu to break the permit system after crossing the Lakhanpur bridge without J&K Governments permission on May 17 in 1953. He was arrested by J&K police and taken to Srinagar Central Jail. But he died mysteriously on June 23 and since then BJS and now BJP has been observing the day all over the country. But it is for the first time after the Shama Prasad Mukherjee Foundation came into being two years back that it is decided to celebrate the day in Kashmir
valley. The family of Dr. Mukherjee including his mother had alleged foul play in the death. Even his mother had written letter to then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru asking him to probe the death. Though Pt. Nehru promised to investigate it but no probe was later ordered and his death has been still a mystery.
However the foundation feels as Dr. Mukherjee laid down the life for the total integration of J&K with India and for unity and integrity of the country, so best tribute to this legendary leader will be to observe the day in Kashmir valley, the place where he attained the martyrdom. The foundation has made all arrangements and its chairman Tarun Vijay along with the office bearers have been camping in Summer Capital of the state for week now, the sources said.
The VIPs attending the camp will most probably reach Srinagar tomorrow or the day after to participate in the function, the sources added. The sources said the SKICC which is the venue of the seminar has been sanitized fully as authorities don't want to take any chance of security lapse. The participants have been issued the passes and no one without an invitation card will be allowed to take part in the function, the sources revealed.
Terming it a historical occasion the sources said apprehending any resistance from separatists the authorities have taken all preventive measures. The sources said besides General(retd.) B.P Maliq, former diplomat Rangarajan, renowned journalists M.J Akbar, Syed Naqvi and BJP National general secretary Ram Lal are also attending the seminar.
