ISI tension goes up, ceasefire violated again | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMI, June 21: As June 24, the date when Indo-Pak foreign secretaries meet to set in motion the dialogue process suspended since 26/11 attacks, approaches nearer, the tension on the part of ISI think-tanks seems to be going up. Since Sunday, ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence), the infamous Pak agency stated to be behind every militant attack in the state and elsewhere in the country, has made to two desperate attempts to push militants into J&K. Yesterday, an unsuccessful attempt was made to push militants from across the LOC in Machil sector of Kashmir amidst the violation of ceasefire. Today, a similar attempt was made on the international border (IB) from the border Abdullian area of R S Pura sector near here. BSF sources said a BSF patrol Maruti Gypsy came under sudden fire from militants who had come close to the barbed fire fence near the Abdullian border outpost at about 4.05 am. Though the vehicle was caught in militants' fire, nearby BSF ambush parties returned the fire and rescued it. In the Machil incident, two army porters had died, but in today's attack, there was no casualty. Only a cow belonging to Lakhvinder Singh of Abdullian got killed, the sources added. Sources said the militants were given cover by the Pak Rangers to facilitate infiltration by them. The firing was followed by a powerful IED blast near the fencing, the sources added. Sources said the exchange of fire between the two sides continued for about an hour and a half. Locals, however, said the exchange of fire lasted over eight hours. "We heard the sound of bullets till 1 pm," said Romesh Kumar. The ISI was desperate to push militants into the Indian territory with a mission to make some big strike here on the eve of foreign secretary level talks, the sources added. The ISI never wanted peace to take roots between the two countries and only wanted to keep the pot of militancy boiling in the state, sources said. It has often been noticed that such incidents do occur on the eve of talks between the two countries. On June 24 Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao is to visit Pakistan where she will meet her counterpart Salman Bashir. On June 26 P Chidambaram will fly to Islamabad to attend the SAARC Home Minister Conference. On July 15 external affairs minister S M Krishna is to visit Pakistan to hold talks on several significant issues.
