BJP accuses govt of discriminating Rajouri, Poonch
6/23/2010 12:04:29 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 22: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today accused the state and the central governments of discriminating and neglecting Jammu region particularly twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch.
“The project of rail line to Poonch district has not been started since past 15 years while to start railways in Kashmir most of the material was airlifted. This is in spite of the fact that the topography of these districts is more suitable and less costly for the purpose of laying railway line than that of Kashmir,” Kuldeep Raj Gupta, BJP leader told reporters here.
Gupta alleged that tourist spots in Rajouri and Poonch districts have been ignored by the successive state governments. “Both the districts are having innumerable beautiful spots which have great tourist potential but have been totally ignored in consonance with the state and central governments policy of discriminating against Jammu region,” he charged.
He added one such spot is Noori Chhamb which apart from being breathtakingly, has a great historical significance as well. “The development of the tourist spots in the region could go a long way in ameliorating the economic hardships of the people and bring down the unemployment in the region,” he maintained.
“During recent two days visit of the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh to Jammu and Kashmir, he announced a package of rupees 100 crore for Agriculture University of Kashmir but he did not even gave a single penny for Jammu Agriculture University or any other institution. The Prime Minister seems to have forgotten that the agriculture of Jammu was affected due to drought and the farmers had to suffer a lot and he had nothing to offer for the succor of these suffering rural folks,” the BJP leader alleged.
He also felt surprised over not paying any attention to the settlement of the migrants of Rajouri, Poonch, Doda etc. and those of 1947, 1965 and 1971. “People were hopeful that the PM would declare something about the settlement of these refugees. But no initiative was taken by the PM in this regard,” he said.
Referring to CM's decision to extend the benefits of SRO-43 to the surrendered militants, the BJP leader said that it appears that the State government is overtly and covertly encouraging those who are responsible for bloodshed and destruction of property in the state.
“The government should desist from such appeasing policies to separatists or militants, which would ultimately endanger the integrity and sovereignty of the state and the country,” Gupta said, adding “Instead, the government needs to gear up its administration to give due benefits of SRO-43 to those for whom the policy was framed. There are hundreds of such cases still pending due to red tapism in the government.”
