Drizzles give respite to Jammuites from intense heat
Monsoon likely to reach Jammu on June 30

JAMMU, June 22: Light showers today brought a sudden dip in the temperature, providing the much-needed relief to city residents from the stifling heat during the past few days.
The maximum temperature, which had soared to 45.8 degrees Celsius on June 20, came down by several degrees today. The maximum relative humidity was 31 per cent with the minimum relative reduced to zero.
The immediate fallout of the brief spell of showers was felt by one and all as it brought smile on other wise drenched faces soaked in sweat. Large number of people ventured out to enjoy the cool breeze and fresh air.
Met officials said, "Since the atmosphere had moisture and low pressure was built in the mountains paving way for the unpredicted rains."
They also predicted light showers on June 24, and 25, 2010 and ruled out pre-monsoon showers in the state.
Powercom too has benefited from the sudden showers with a reduction in the load, which is otherwise very high during this time of the year.
Dr M K Khushu, Chief Scientist Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Scientist and Technology Jammu (SKUAST-J) said that light drizzle provided relief to the people who were reeling under intense heat waves.
He however, said that the mercury remained hovering above 44 degree Celsius as the maximum temperature was recorded at 44.3 degree Celsius while minimum temperature was 28.8 degree Celsius.
The Chief Scientist said that the conditions are favourable for timely monsoon.
"The monsoon rains may be delayed by four to six days but we are expecting that Monsoon would reach to Jammu by June 30 and if it gets delayed, it would reach to Jammu on July 3," he added.
"The favourable conditions may helps in advancement of the monsoons," he said.
However, farmers are keeping their fingers closed for the hot weather to prevail as paddy transplantation is scheduled to begin from this week.
