Bandh, Bandh, Bandh: Kashmiris fed up with the bandh culture | | | RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 22: Was there any legitimate reason behind the shutdown call? There was no reason. What exactly happened on Sunday or why did the security forces retaliate - action that led to the killing of two Kashmiri boys? On Sunday, one Kashmiri youth 25-year-old Javed Ahmad Malla lost his life due to the CRPF firing, which also left 11 others injured in the Old City of Srinagar. Four of them were security force personnel. Malla was killed in Noorabad in firing by personnel of 161 batalion of CRPF. Why did the CRPF open fire? The CRPF opened fire in "self-defence" when the unruly mob, according to trustworthy sources, started pelting stones at thier bunker. Actually, the unruly mob was protesting in the Noorabad area following the death of Mohammad Rafiq Bangroo at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) hospital, Soura, Srinagar, who had been beaten up by the personnel of 161 Battalion of CRPF on June 13 during identical protests over the death of Tufail Ahmad Mattoo. Immediately after Bangroo was laid to rest at the Eidgah graveyard, a group of unruly elements surrounded the CRPF bunker and resorted to heavy pelting stones with a view to teaching the CRPF personnel a lesson. Such was the situation that the CRPF personnel were left with no other option but to open fire in self-defence. The result was the death of Javed Ahmad Malla and injuries to four-five others, all part of the violent mob. Had the CRPF personnel not reacted on time, the unruly mob would have surely killed a few CRPF personnel. According to a CRPF spokesman, a violent mob had sought to set afire the bunker of the CRPF 161 battalion at Noorbagh. The police did its best to chase them away by resorting to cane-charge, but with no result. Instead of leaving the place, the mob turned more violent leading to a serious situation. "The violence had intensified to the extent that both the police and CRPF personnel had been left with no other choice but to act in self-defence and the result was the death of the youth." That the CRPF spokesperson did not exaggerate things or that he gave a correct version could be seen from what the police said regarding the Noorabad incident. As per the police spokesman, who belonged to Kashmir and is accountable to the State Government that is soft towards militants, "After the conclusion of Nimaz-e-Jinaza and burial of Mohammad Rafiq Bangroo, a violent mob of miscreants pelted stones at the personnel of 161 Bn CRPF at Bakshipora, Noorbagh. The mob attempted to set ablaze a mobile Bunker of 161 Bn of CRPF, besides forcing their entry into the CRPF camp and damaging the property…When lathi-charge and tear smoke shells failed to produce the desired results, the CRPF nafri fired in self-defence leading to injuries to five persons, Javed Ahmad Malla who died was one among them." All this shows that the provocation was grave and that there was a real threat to the lives of the security force personnel. They acted because they had to act. It was not the first case of its kind. The Kashmiri Valley has been witnessing similar episodes since long. It has become customary with the separatists like Geelani, the Mirwaiz, Yasin Malik, Nayeem Khan, Shabbir Ahmad Shah, to mention only a few, to instigate the innocent youth to confront the police, the Army and the CRPF so that the clashes between the two result in some casualties. These separatists have been taking recourse to this methodology in order to keep the pot boiling in Kashmir so that they are able to carry on their trade, mint easy money and remain in limelight. They know it full well that they have lost the game and that the only option available with them to steal headlines is to provoke violence in the valley or to ensure the killing of the Kashmiri youth. One can catalogue here instances and instances to show that behind every incident in Kashmir are the likes of Geelani, the Mirwaiz, Yasin Malik, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Khan and others of their ilk. And, this is quite understandable. What is not understandable is the approach of the State Government towards these extremists. The State Government knows that the likes of Geelani are indulging in undesirable activities. It knows that they are hatching conspiracies against the Indian State and the non-Muslims. It knows that they are indulging in activities that motivate the innocent Kashmiri youth to resort to stone-pelting; confront the security force personnel; and attack bunkers, police and army posts. It should have nipped this evil. But, no, it will no do that. Instead, it would issue controversial statements - statements which, instead of dousing the fire, add more fuel to the fire. The Omar Abdullah government can be accused of adopting a policy that suits the Kashmiri extremists and separatists. Had his government acted against these unscrupulous separatists on time, things in Kashmir would have been altogether different. There would have been peace in what was not so-long-ago called paradise on earth. In short, the State Government and the out-on-the-limb Kashmiri separatists are responsible for the ongoing orgy of death and destruction in the Valley. (To be continued)
