early times report
JAMMU, June 25: Police welfare fund (PWF), meant for the welfare of police personnel and their families, is being allegedly used by senior officers to throw lavish parties.Police personnel, from a cop to an Inspector, contributed Rs 2 cr per month to PWF, according to reliable police sources.Sources said even as low ranking officials contributed to the fund, senior officers allegedly enjoyed lavish parties and other benefits by spending the fund money. The PWF was set up to provide financial assistance to the tune of Rs 6 lakh to the families of the dead police personnel, scholarships to their wards, accommodation to the serving police personnel, organise awareness camps and run two police public schools. Sources said police personnel were not satisfied with the way the PWF money was being utilised by senior officers.
The PWF money was also being wasted in renovating the houses and offices of police officers, sources alleged. Also, the accomodation was being provided to only senior police officers and some "influential" cops, the sources added.Retired police personnel welfare association yesterday stated that lack of facilities had led to the demoralisation of the police personnel. This was largely because of the alleged PWF bunglings. The association said the department had ordered the officials, ranking from constable to Inspector, to contribute monthly to PWF for the rehabilitation of widows, retired police personnel and their wards. The association also alleged that there was no audit of the fund. They also demanded a white paper on the use of the welfare fund by the department. According to the association members, the accomodation meant for non-gazetted pfficers had been occupied by gazetted officers. They also alleged that after retirement, they were given nothing from the fund. A senior police officer, however, refuted the association's allegations, claiming PWF was being audited. He said various welfare schemes for widows, retired police personnel and their wards had been launched with PWF help.
