Partly decomposed bodies of old couple found in bed at Trikuta Nagar | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 25: Partly decomposed bodies of a retired PDD official and his ailing wife were today found lying in their bed under mysterious circumstances in sector (extension) 1 of the posh Trikuta Nagar here. Romesh Koul, who worked with electricity judge and retired two years back from PDD, was not seen by the neighbours for the past three days, or so. His wife Rajni Koul, who suffered from multiple ailments and was not keeping well for the past over two decades, had become bed-ridden for the last three years. Though police were still trying to determine what could have led to the couple's death, they said preliminary investigation hinted at a suicide. Romesh was perhaps fed up of the protracted illness of his wife and they ended lives in a suicide pact, police felt. Their only son Chintu, working with a private firm at Bahadur Garh in Haryana, had been informed of the tragedy. He was likely to reach here after midnight, police said. Though neighbours had alerted police of the foul smell emanating from the house, Romesh's brother-in-law S K Moza was the first to go there at about 10.45 am. Moza said he made several calls to Romesh, but no one picked up the phone. He, however, grew suspicious when Chintu told him on phone that no one was responding to his phone calls at their house. Moza, a food corporation of India (FCI) employee posted at Udhampur, missed the office and went to Romesh's house at about 10.45 am. When he entered the room, he found the couple lying dead in their bed. With the opening of the door, the bad odour soon spread in the neighbourhood. In the meaning, police also reached the spot. As the word spread that the couple had most probably been murdered, SSP and DIG also arrived there. A team of foresic science laboratory (FSL), which was also called in to ascertain the reasons behind the deaths. The murder was, however, ruled out by police as no external injury marks were found on the bodies. The bodies were partly decomposed and police were forced to use air freshners to remove unpleasant odour. These were later evacuated in an ambulance to the GMC hospital mortuary. Post-mortem would be conducted on them tomorrow after the arrival of Chintu, police said. The exact cause of death would be determined only after the post-mortem report was made available to them, police added. When this correspondent visited the house situated behind Khoo wala temple, residents said they were stunned at the deaths. Raja Koul said he had not seen Romesh for the past three days, or so. Romesh was a very social person, he added. Residents could not believe that the couple had committed suicide. They said the first indication they had that something was amiss was when they noticed that a foul smell and a lot of flies were coming out of the house. Police said they had registered a case in this connection and launched inquest proceedings.
