NC a divided house in Poonch, several join hands against MLA | | | BHARAT BHUSHAN EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 25: National Conference leader Shah Mohammad Tantray's vocal disdain for MLA Aiyaz Jan won him accolades in a meeting of panchs and sarpanchs and other party leaders in Poonch today. All the Poonch district NC cadres, who attended the meeting, approved of Tantray's allegations that the MLA had failed to come true to the expectations of the people of Poonch assembly segment. The meeting, held at Tantray's Allah Pir house in the town, was also attended by Poonch district NC president Qazi Mohammad Syed Beigh, besides almost all sarpanchs and panchs of the villages that fall in the constituency. A clear split became visible within NC when Tantray, Qazi and others vowed to "strengthen" NC in Poonch "without" the MLA. The move is also being seen as a tactics of Tantray and others to build pressure on the party high command in view of the forthcoming panchayat polls. A hint in this regard was also given by speakers in the meeting. "We will decide about the candidates for panchayat polls this time," Tantray, Qazi and others said. "If MLA's intervention was sought in finalising the names of candidates for panchayat polls, we will revolt," they asserted. Tantray said it was sad to note that the MLA had given contracts of various works to a select group only, ignoring the dedicated party workers and unemployed youth. By giving contracts to unemployed youth, the party could win sympathies of a large section of the people, he felt. He said though MLA had been making claims that several development works were being done in Poonch segment on his initiative, not much had been done on ground. Qazi alleged that Jan had failed to mitigate the sufferings of common masses as even mid-day meal was not available in several government schools. It was clear from the speeches that the majority Poonch district NC cadres wanted to distance themselves from the MLA, who, they opined, was not "good enough" to deserve their cooperation and respect. Chief minister Omar Abdullah, who last month had dismissed as "unfounded" reports of differences with coalition partner Congress over transfer of state government officials in key posts, was now undoubtedly faced with a piquant situation. He would have to take immediate steps to bring the two factions together if he wanted to see NC performing well in the upcoming panchayat polls. Omar also cannot afford to break ties with Tantray, a retired DIC general manager, who had taken more than 7,000 votes in the Poonch byelections. With the efforts of Farooq Abdullah, he was brought into NC fold to ensure the victory of Jan in the last assembly elections that followed the bypolls. Jan had won and Tantray's role in his victory had proved to be crucial. But this time, Tantray has levelled series of allegations against him.He said MLA had spent lakhs in some villages, but ignored several other areas where there was an urgent need for development works. Apart from Tantray and Qazi, the meeting was also attended by Madan Maini, Surjan Singh, G M Jafri, Haji M A Akram and Manzoor Lone.
