Cultural sanctity of art losing ethical dispensations | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 25: How much of the art and culture of the state has groomed of late under the patronage of the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages whose head is Chief Minister Omar Abdullah himself as its president can be gauged by the silent echoes of the magnificence of two buildings of Abhinav Theater and Kala Kender. Though the activities undertaken in these colossal ghosts of brick and cement are due to the personnel efforts of some of the art lovers shelving money from their own wallets to keep the culture living, the reciprocal from the Institution is not even up to providing the basic minimum infrastructural needs to make a programme satisfactorily successful. Collaterally, the present culture in vogue in the institution is about the filling of posts for various disciplines, the vacancies having arisen, and the Secretary Head of the Academy busy in "doing arrangements" for making good use of the occasion to do the urgency. Already under the mistrust of the art and culture lovers of the state, particularly of the people of the Jammu region, the Academy functions are not suiting for the taste and development of the artists here who lament it to be more Valley centric than helping the people here in "right perspective". Citing one among the many glaring examples, a source discloses over some facts and figures available in the JKAACL record of more than a decade back performances done and awards and citations earned by some theatrical groups having shelved back to appease chosen one only. "Why a chosen ones are found competent only for workshops and projects of the state Academy or some in collaborations or otherwise also while an unending list of names of the people of art and culture are available in throughout the state in this regard," said the source talking to ET "The recruitment ethics here too have started giving the signals about the Academy being tried to be turned into a forte of a particular community while ignoring the competence of the real candidates as well as the secular sanctity of the region," said a disgruntled candidate having lost his chance to secure Academy's PRO job few months back. Also the system of square pegs being fitted in round holes in the Academy's functioning has put the entire system working on the whims and fancies of unskilled workers or the technicians or low-grade employees undertaking the jobs not of their own domain. "Such practice is quite in vogue in the theater itself where a technician of one system is handling the other while a performance is going on thus putting the show on risk," said the source within the Academy. On a particular recruitment of a person in the library section of the Academy, the source said that the new incumbent is a "funny recruit" in the Dogri section whose connection with Hindi, English or Punjabi is remotest one, leaving the Dogri just out for a while. "A query for a Dogri book from him would offer his blank stare into the client's eyes as he is not even competent to read any text in other language except the few words of Urdu," said the source adding, " A choice by appeasement".
