‘CM can't live in 2 rooms’ | JK's second family to shift in a new house | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 25: It seems the Chief Minister's old house is no longer catering to the needs of the second family of the state. A new spacious and palatial house is coming up at Gupkar in the summer capital for them. The newly constructed house presents a gorgeous look. Sources say a hefty amount of Rs 1.5 crores have been spent on the construction of the house till date. A similar amount, they believe, will be needed for the finishing touches and furnishing. Omar refused to live in the house renovated for former Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad saying his small family did not need a huge house. "I have a small family and would prefer to live in my house. I will be comfortable in two rooms", he had said. The news about Omar's new house has been taken with a pinch of salt by his admirers. According to them, it has tarnished his clean image. "There was absolutely no need to construct a house when he could go to the renovated house where Azad lived for some time", they said. The said house which will now host diplomats and visiting foreign dignitaries was renovated at a cost of Rs 11 crore. Azad lived in the house for a few months. He had to vacate it following his resignation after peoples Democratic Party (PDP) withdrew support to his government after the Amarnath land row. The house has sixty-six rooms and twelve presidential suits. The house, according to noted historian Fida Muhammad Hasnain is haunted. According to him it is inauspicious and cost Maharaja Hari Singh his kingdom. It is believed that Ghulam Nabi Azad, who lived in the house for a brief period, also lost his government because of the occult forces that live there. The house was used as a torture chamber during hey days of militancy. It is believed that a number of youth succumbed to torture and their ghosts add to the horror of the building. The old gardener, Abdul Khaliq Bhat, who served the Dogras, has heard screams in the building. Omar, according to his admirers, does not believe in superstitions and should have, therefore, preferred to live there instead of getting a new house constructed for him and his family. He had made a mark by refusing to live in a lavish house. But, the house that is being constructed is by no means a modest structure. Omar, like anybody else has a right to construct a new house. A Chief Minister cannot be expected to live in two rooms. People, however, are interested in knowing whether the funds for the new house have come from the state exchequer?
